The official handover ceremony was held recently at the Officers’ Mess within the Onitsha Military Barracks.

The Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Hon. Anthony Nworah, who was the chief guest of honor, praised Col. Mohammed for his exemplary leadership and for fostering a harmonious working relationship with the local government, which he said was instrumental in maintaining peace across Onitsha during his tenure.

Yakubu, to emulate his predecessor’s dedication and professionalism, while assuring him of the local government’s full cooperation. “We are committed to supporting the new commander and strengthening our collaboration with the military to ensure continued peace and security in the region,” he stated.

Addressing the broader issue of national security, Nworah lauded the Nigerian military for its ongoing efforts in combating insecurity across the country. He gave special recognition to the Onitsha Military Cantonment, noting its visible impact on safety in both Onitsha and the greater Anambra State.

“I must commend the military in Onitsha for doing a marvelous job. Their contribution to maintaining peace is felt not only in this city but throughout the state. My administration is eager to strengthen our synergy with them. Our doors are always open for partnership in the interest of security,” the mayor said.

In his farewell address, Col. A.K. Mohammed described his successor as a seasoned and capable officer.

He expressed confidence in Col. Yakubu’s ability to succeed in the role and urged all officers within the cantonment to give him their full support.

“I am confident that Col. Yakubu will deliver excellently. I ask all officers and personnel to extend the same cooperation and loyalty to him as they did to me,” Mohammed stated.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the ceremony, Hon. Chiejina Obieze, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Charles Soludo on Security, expressed the state government’s satisfaction with the activities of the military in Onitsha.

He said that the army has played a crucial role in maintaining law and order in the state.

“The contributions of the military to Anambra’s security landscape cannot be overstated. The outgoing commander has performed admirably, and we appreciate his service. We also look forward to a productive relationship with Col. Yakubu. The people of Anambra wish him great success,” Obieze said.
