COOUTH Introduces Emergency Care Pack to Speed Up Treatment, Ease Burden on Families

By Titus Eleweke

The Management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, has introduced an Emergency Care Pack to facilitate prompt initial treatment for patients brought to the hospital in critical condition and minimise delays associated with obtaining essential medical consumables.

The initiative, introduced under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Dr Maureen Uche Umeakuewulu, is designed to ensure that emergency patients receive timely attention while their relatives make arrangements for other necessary medical requirements.

The Emergency Care Pack addresses a common challenge in emergency situations, where patients may arrive at the hospital in critical condition before their families can provide the consumables required for immediate treatment.

By making essential medical supplies readily available, the initiative enables healthcare workers to commence appropriate care without unnecessary delays caused by the procurement of emergency materials or the completion of preliminary administrative procedures, including the opening of patients’ folders.

The intervention reflects the hospital management’s recognition of the urgency of emergency care and the emotional and financial pressures families face when a loved one is rushed to the hospital.

The pack contains essential medical consumables, drugs and intravenous fluids, including 5 per cent dextrose, as well as lancets and glucometer test strips. These items are provided as clinically indicated to support the initial management of maternal, adult and paediatric emergencies.

Beyond the provision of essential supplies, the initiative is intended to bridge the gap between a patient’s arrival at the hospital and the availability of additional resources required for continued treatment.

It also offers families some relief during stressful moments by helping to ensure that the absence of immediate supplies does not unnecessarily delay the commencement of care.

Under Dr Umeakuewulu’s administration, the Emergency Care Pack represents a practical approach to improving the delivery of emergency services by prioritising patients’ immediate needs, supporting healthcare workers and promoting a more responsive hospital environment.

The initiative also aligns with the broader healthcare development agenda of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s administration, which emphasises improved healthcare services and people-centred development.

It further reflects COOUTH’s contribution to the long-term aspirations of Anambra Vision 2070, in which the health and well-being of Ndi Anambra are fundamental to sustainable development and an improved quality of life.

For Dr Umeakuewulu, the Emergency Care Pack represents an effort to translate compassion into practical action by reducing avoidable delays, supporting healthcare professionals and giving emergency patients a better opportunity to receive timely medical attention when every second counts.

At COOUTH, Amaku, the message is clear: every life matters, every second counts, and emergency care must begin without unnecessary delay.
