Anambra South By-Election: A Test of Conscience, a Prelude to November 8

As Anambra State inches closer to the much-anticipated governorship election on November 8, the forthcoming Anambra South Senatorial by-election on August 16th,offers a timely opportunity for the people to reaffirm their democratic resolve. While the stakes may appear limited to a single senatorial seat, the implications for the state’s political climate and electoral integrity are far-reaching.

The by-election, necessitated by a vacancy in the red chamber created by the death of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, is not just a procedural affair,it is a litmus test for both the electorate and the political class. It provides a chance to model the kind of civic maturity, issue-based campaigns, and peaceful participation that should characterize every election, especially the one looming in November.

In recent months, Anambra has witnessed increased political activity, much of it marked by tension, accusations, and the unfortunate creeping in of religious, and economic divisions. The senator that will emerge from this by-election will not only represent Anambra South but will also symbolically represent the kind of leadership the state desires ahead of the governorship polls.

It is in this context that we call on all stakeholders, political parties, candidates, electoral officials, traditional rulers, youth groups, and especially the voters to approach this election with calm, responsibility, and an unshakable commitment to peace.

Every voter must understand the power and weight of their vote. In times like these, when emotions run high and interests collide, the conscience becomes the most valuable compass. Vote according to your conscience not for money, not for religious loyalty, not out of fear or pressure but for the values, ideas, and vision that can advance your community.

We also urge security agencies and Independent National Electorial Commission (INEC) to maintain neutrality, professionalism, and transparency. The legitimacy of any election hinges not only on the votes cast but also on the fairness of the process. Any act of intimidation, vote-buying, or manipulation,no matter how small must be condemned and dealt with according to the law.

This by-election should be seen for what it truly is, a dress rehearsal for November 8. If we get it right now, through peaceful conduct, high voter turnout, and credible results,we set the stage for a governorship election that can restore faith in Anambra’s democracy and leadership.

Let this by-election remind us that democracy is not just about who wins, but how we all participate. Let it remind politicians that power is not a birthright but a trust. And let it remind the electorate that true power lies in the quiet, deliberate act of casting a vote guided by truth and conscience.

Anambra South, the spotlight is on you. Let your voice be heard, peacefully and purposefully.
