The fifth annual August Meeting of the Mbada Women Association of Wazobia FM Onitsha was held on Sunday, with a strong call for women to take up greater roles in societal development.
This year’s event took place at Shanahan Hall, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Onitsha, under the theme “Women Wey Balance”, focusing on capacity building and strengthening women’s roles in family and community growth.
A guest speaker at the event, Hon. Mimi Ifeoma Azikwe, who represents Onitsha North Constituency I in the Anambra State House of Assembly, emphasized the many challenges faced by Nigerian women.
She advocated for increased empowerment to foster a more inclusive, women-friendly society.
Hon. Azikwe, a lawyer and cybersecurity analyst, urged women to seize the opportunities available to them and to build their personal capacities rather than relying solely on their husbands or partners.
“Every strong force in the world is a feminine being. Scientists understand the power of women, that is why hurricanes are often given feminine names. This tells you something about the power women hold, and we must tap into that power,” she stated.
She further encouraged women to step into leadership roles, saying that women must be part of decision-making processes.
“If we don’t get involved, no one will hand it to us. The world is evolving, and as a woman, you must evolve too. Ask questions—what can you do to help yourself?”she added.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Iwuoha Julian, a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, expressed concern over the high rate of maternal mortality in Nigeria. He emphasized the urgent need for improved access to sexual and reproductive health services and rights for women.
On the panel was Mrs. Chiwendu Uba, an educationist, who addressed the growing issue of bullying among schoolchildren. She urged mothers to pay closer attention to their children to better understand their emotional and psychological challenges.
“Always be friends with your child. Let your kids feel free to talk to you. That’s how you get to know what they’re going through. Listen to them even if their questions are annoying sometimes, create time for them,” she advised.
In his remarks, Mr. Moses Okonkwo, the Station’s Programme Manager, said the Mbada August Meeting is part of Wazobia FM’s ongoing commitment to empowering women and addressing key issues that affect their well-being.
“Women are the pillars of society, the home builders. Their impact cannot be overemphasized. That’s why we organize the Mbada Women August Meeting annually. As a community-oriented radio station, we believe in highlighting the challenges women face and helping to provide solutions,” he stated.
According to him, this year’s theme, “Women Wey Balance,” was chosen to underscore the importance of equipping women with the skills and knowledge needed for personal growth and societal impact.
The event also provided a platform for women across the state to connect, share experiences, learn about health and wellness, and receive guidance on family and marital matters.
Mr. Okonkwo thanked the management of Wazobia FM for their continued support of the initiative and promised that the next edition would be even more impactful.
