Allegations Surface Against Anambra Council Chairman Over Alleged Blackmail , Victimization

Chimezie Obi

Serious allegations of blackmail and victimization have emerged against Hon. Chimezie Obi, Chairman of the Ekwusigo Local Government Area in Anambra State. According to unnamed sources, affluent residents within the council area have allegedly been subjected to unfair treatment, sparking concern over the Chairman’s conduct in office.

Reports alleged that the Chairman has distanced himself from certain stakeholders he perceives as having failed to support his political ambitions, particularly during his election campaign.

This has reportedly led to a sense of unease among some community members regarding their standing within the local government structure.

Notably, one such allegation involves Mr. Paul Oluchukwu Okafor, the Managing Director, Paulcalis De Villa Hotel, situates at the Michael Junction, Uruokpara road, Ozubulu. Credible sources claim that the hotel along with its managing director and staff has been unfairly targeted. The Chairman is alleged to have issued threats of closure unless unspecified sums of money were paid . These claims remain unverified at this time.

The arrest of more than 40 individuals at Paulcalis Hotel on Sunday night by operatives of Agunechemba, a local security outfit in Anambra State, has further intensified scrutiny of the Chairman’s leadership.

Critics have interpreted the arrests as indicative of authoritarian behavior and have raised concerns about potential abuse of office.

Witnesses report that the arrested individuals, most of whom were patronizes at the hotel’s nightclub, were transported to Agunechemba’s Awka office without explanation. One of the detainees, speaking anonymously, said:

“On Sunday evening, I was at the Paulcalis Hotel nightclub when Agunechemba operatives arrived. Around forty of us were apprehended and taken to their Awka office. We were not told why we were arrested. We remained in custody until Monday afternoon, when we were screened and released without charges. It was clear we were not the intended targets. However, the hotel’s proprietor is reportedly still being held, allegedly on the instruction of the local government Chairman.”the source said.

Attempts to reach both the management of Paulcalis Hotel and the Chairman of Ekwusigo LGA for comment were unsuccessful, as all communication channels appeared to be inactive at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, individuals who identified themselves as regular patronizes of the hotel claimed that property was damaged during the raid. These accounts have not been independently verified.

When contacted, Agunechemba’s Public Relations Officer, Comrade Nweke Nweke, he confirmed the arrests. He stated that the security operation followed an intelligence report regarding alleged criminal activity at a hotel in Ozubulu as the PRO declined providing further details.
