Gov Otti Hosts Launch of EU-Funded Support for Sustainable and Innovative Social Protection Systems in Nigeria

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, on Thursday officially hosted the launch of the European Union-funded Support for Sustainable and Innovative Social Protection Systems in Nigeria (SUSI) at the Government House Banquet Hall in Umuahia.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @alexotti, the governor stated that the programme is being implemented in partnership with UNICEF and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

He noted that the initiative will enhance Abia’s social protection systems and extend critical support to the state’s most vulnerable citizens.

“As part of this commitment,” “the European Union has generously donated IT equipment and accessories to the Abia State Government—a vital contribution that will strengthen our data collection capacity and address longstanding concerns surrounding data integrity.”Otti said,

During the event, Governor Otti also inaugurated the Abia State Social Protection Council, describing it as a reaffirmation of his administration’s dedication to inclusive governance.

He emphasized the role of structured institutions such as the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, and the Abia State Senior Citizen Centre in building a state “where no one is left behind.”

The governor extended his appreciation to key development partners, including the Head of the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, H.E. Ambassador Samuela Isopi; the Country Director of the ILO Office for Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Dr. Vanessa Lerato Phala-Moyo; and UNICEF Chief of Field Services, Judith Leveillee, for their unwavering support in building a resilient and equitable Abia.
