The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, has described breast cancer as an alarming and rising “generational threat” in Nigeria, warning that the disease continues to claim the lives of countless women each year.

Dr. Soludo, who is also the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, made this known in a statement on Wednesday to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed globally every October.

Expressing deep concern over the increasing prevalence of breast cancer and related conditions, she emphasized the urgent need for improved awareness, early detection, and preventive strategies.

“The statistics are alarming, but we can all play our part in reducing the impact,” “Two key steps are learning how to perform regular self-breast examinations and going for periodic clinical screenings in reputable medical facilities.” she said.

She stressed that early detection remains the most effective approach to managing and significantly reducing the mortality rate associated with breast cancer.

Studies have shown that when breast cancer is detected at an early stage, the chances of successful treatment and survival increase dramatically.

While acknowledging the significance of October as a global period for promoting breast cancer awareness, Dr. Soludo noted that efforts must extend beyond the commemorative month.

“We must do more as concerned stakeholders to strengthen awareness and extend cancer education to every community, especially in rural areas where access to healthcare and information is limited,” she urged.

Dr. Soludo reaffirmed her commitment to championing women’s health through the Healthy Living Initiative, her signature project focused on wellness education, nutrition, preventive healthcare, and community outreach.

“Empowering women with knowledge about their health and encouraging proactive habits is essential in the fight against breast cancer. Awareness saves lives,” she added.
