Anambra Police Unmask Man Behind Violent Masquerade Incident in Awgbu
The Anambra State Police Command has uncovered the identity of a man involved in a violent masquerade incident that led to a breach of public peace in Awgbu community, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Police, the individual concealed inside the masquerade has been identified as Ifesinachi Ezeolu, a 28-year-old man.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police confirmed that Ezeolu was responsible for the violent conduct displayed during a masquerade outing in the community.
Ikenga stated that the Anambra State Police Command and the Nigeria Police Force hold deep respect for the cultural and traditional practices of the people. However, he emphasized that no cultural activity or belief system should be exploited as a shield to harass, assault, intimidate, or violate the fundamental human rights of citizens.
He further noted that masquerade activities, like all public gatherings, must be carried out peacefully and strictly within the confines of the law.
Any act capable of instilling fear, causing injury, or disrupting public order, he said, will be decisively addressed by the Police.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other suspects linked to the incident, with a view to bringing them to justice.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, has reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
He affirmed that the Police will continue to collaborate with traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to promote peaceful cultural expressions, while ensuring the safety and fundamental rights of all individuals are protected.
