US Officials Meet IGP in Abuja to Strengthen Nigeria’s Internal Security Strategy

Officials from the United States Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), Washington, at the weekend met with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in Abuja to review internal security developments and deepen bilateral cooperation in policing.
The meeting took place during a courtesy visit by a United States delegation to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The delegation was led by the US Deputy Assistant Secretary, Ms. Maggie Nardi, and included Mr. Jacob Wright, Senior Advisor, INL, and Mr. Grane Douglas, Acting Director, INL Abuja.

Discussions focused on ongoing areas of cooperation between the INL and the Nigeria Police Force, as well as new opportunities for strengthening institutional engagement in policing and internal security development.

The delegation reviewed existing partnerships and explored strategies aimed at enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Police.

During the meeting, Ms. Nardi reaffirmed the commitment of the United States Government, through the INL, to supporting the Nigeria Police Force.

She highlighted plans to expand specialised training programmes and provide modern operational equipment, stressing that sustained collaboration is essential for building institutional capacity and improving policing outcomes.
In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police expressed appreciation for the continued partnership and support of the INL, particularly in the area of tactical capacity development.
He noted that such collaboration has contributed significantly to improving the professionalism and effectiveness of police operations.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the IGP specifically highlighted the positive impact of INL-supported training initiatives on the operational performance of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS).
He observed that recent operations by the squad have demonstrated high levels of professionalism, discipline, and tactical competence.
The IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, further reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening cooperation with the INL and other international partners. He emphasised the importance of adopting global best practices in policing as part of ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery, improve public safety, and ensure a safer Nigeria.
