Aba Power Resumes Full Operations Following Restoration of Gas Supply

Aba Power, Nigeria’s newest electricity distribution company (DisCo), has resumed full electricity supply to its customers after a disruption in gas supply to its embedded generation company, Geometric Power Aba Limited. The 188-megawatt power plant is located in the Osisioma Industrial Layout, Abia State.
The restoration was confirmed by the Managing Director of Aba Power, Mr. Ugo Opiegbe, in a statement signed by the company’s Senior Communication and Brand Manager, Mr. Edise Ekong.
According to the statement, the disruption began at about 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26, when Heirs Energies—the gas supplier to the plant from Operating Mining Lease (OML) 17—detected a technical fault and was compelled to suspend gas supply in order to address the issue promptly.
“We are pleased that the technical challenge was resolved swiftly and professionally by Heirs Energies, which enabled us to restore electricity supply to nine of the 17 local government areas within the Aba Ring-Fenced Area of Abia State,” the statement said.
Aba Power expressed regret over the inconvenience experienced by its customers during the period of gas unavailability. It noted that, as a contingency measure, the company sourced electricity from the national grid to bridge the shortfall, ensuring that power supply to major manufacturing and industrial customers was maintained as much as possible.
However, the situation was compounded by a nationwide power outage, as the entire country experienced a total blackout from about 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, following a complete collapse of the national electricity grid.
With Aba Power restoring supply later that afternoon, Engineer Cliff Eneh—a former senior manager at the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) and an ex-employee of Texas Power and Light in the United States remarked that Aba stood out nationally.
“With Aba Power’s resumption of supply, Aba is currently the only place in the entire Nigerian federation enjoying electricity,” Eneh said.
He lamented that there was zero power allocation to the 11 electricity distribution companies serving Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Enugu, Yola, Benin, Kano, and Kaduna, among others.
“The nation must urgently develop a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the persistent problem of grid collapse,” “This is why I consistently advocate for the embedded power plant model, which Aba Power is successfully demonstrating. It provides operational autonomy and agility, allowing for more reliable and responsive electricity supply.”he added.
