Police Arrest Officers over Killing of Motorcyclist in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested officers attached to the Central Police Station (CPS), Abakaliki, over the alleged killing of a motorcyclist, identified as Nwanchor Uwaezuruike (male), who was shot dead on Tuesday night.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, has condemned the incident and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
Insideoutnews gathered that the incident occurred along the popular Spera-in-Deo Flyover in the Abakaliki metropolis.
The confirmation of the arrest was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, and made available to journalists in Abakaliki.
According to the statement, the Ebonyi State Police Command, on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the fatal shooting incident that occurred on January 27, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., around Hariz Filling Station.
Preliminary reports revealed that operatives of the Command attached to the Central Police Station, Abakaliki, were on routine patrol around the Spera-in-Deo Flyover when they responded to a distress call.
During the operation, one of the officers allegedly discharged his firearm unprofessionally by shooting into the air.
Tragically, the bullet struck a motorcycle rider, later identified as Nwanchor Uwaezuruike.
The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Following the incident, the officers involved were taken into custody.
The Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (DC, SCID) to conduct a thorough, impartial, and professional investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
CP Uche-Anya also expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them, as well as the general public, that justice would be served.
“The Command reiterates its commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism and will keep the public informed as further developments emerge from the investigation,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, there is a video currently circulating on social media alleges that the officers were chasing the deceased within the area before one of them pulled the trigger. The Police Command has yet to officially confirm this claim, stating that investigations are ongoing.
