Anagu Transforming Awka North: From Near Slump to an Emerging Smart City
Chief ThankGod Anagu, Mayor, Awka North Local Government Area
From the boundary communities linking Awka and Enugu States across the Ezu River, through the swampy rice farms of Awba–Ofemili, and from the borders of Igbariam in Anambra East Local Government Area to Achalla, the headquarters of Awka North Local Government Area, the landscape once told a depressing story of abandonment. These were communities that, until recently, had resigned themselves to neglect and obscurity.

Predominantly agrarian in nature, Awka North had for decades remained on the fringes of development. Before the creation of the old Anambra State, many of these communities could not boast of electricity supply, and whatever minimal development existed was largely incidental, driven mainly by proximity to Awka, the state capital.
Successive local government administrations made several attempts, often without tangible results, to stimulate meaningful development capable of attracting sustainable human and infrastructural growth.
By the time the present Mayor of Awka North Local Government Area, Chief ThankGod Anagu, assumed office, numerous critical sectors were crying out for urgent intervention. Infrastructure had deteriorated, public institutions were near collapse, insecurity was on the rise, and the council headquarters itself reflected years of neglect.
However, within just fourteen months of his administration, the ThankGod Anagu Intervention Scheme has leapfrogged Awka North into an era of rapid human and material development,an achievement many now describe as unprecedented in the history of the local government.
Chief Anagu has demonstrated uncommon commitment to inclusive governance, social security, and grassroots development.
His administration has not only rekindled hope among residents but has also exposed the vast socio-economic potential of what was once regarded as a forgotten local government area in Anambra State.
Under his watch, a total of 39 classroom blocks have been renovated and fully equipped, significantly improving the learning environment for pupils across the council area.
In addition, over twelve roads have either been constructed or facilitated by the Anagu administration, enhancing connectivity, easing transportation, and stimulating local commerce.
In response to the growing security challenges confronting rural communities, the Anagu-led administration installed security surveillance cameras across strategic locations in the local government.
This proactive measure has greatly supported ongoing efforts to curb criminal activities and restore public confidence.
The Awka North Local Government Secretariat in Achalla, which had long been abandoned and nearly deserted, has also received a major facelift. Dilapidated structures within the secretariat complex have been renovated, while several new buildings are springing up. Notable among these are the renovated main administrative block, the conference hall, and the Rt. Hon. Justice P.K. Nwokedi Hall, all of which now reflect the dignity of a functional local government headquarters.
Furthermore, the perennial challenges of flooding and erosion affecting riverine communities were decisively addressed through erosion control projects in Ebenebe and surrounding towns.
These interventions have reportedly saved over 36,000 buildings and vast expanses of farmlands from imminent destruction, thereby protecting livelihoods and stabilizing communities.
Agricultural Outreach
Recognizing Awka North’s agrarian identity, the Anagu administration—working in collaboration with the Anambra State Government, has prioritized agricultural empowerment. Through targeted outreach programs, local farmers have benefited from initiatives such as the “Farming to Feed” program and the Palm Revolution Initiative, both of which have accelerated agricultural productivity and food security in the council area.
As Chief ThankGod Anagu continues to steer Awka North toward a new developmental frontier, many indigenes believe that sustaining this momentum requires continuity.
There is a growing consensus among stakeholders that granting him more time will further consolidate these transformational strides and firmly position Awka North as an emerging smart and economically viable local government area in Anambra State.
