Abia State Wraps Up Compensation for 1,025 Hectares in Nsulu
The Abia State Government has announced that it has paid compensation to the people of Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued and signed by Hon. Chaka I. Chukwumerije, Commissioner for Lands, Abia State, the government confirmed that the payment covers 1,025 hectares of land acquired for the Abia State Airport project.
He explained that the Abia State Government, on behalf of the Federal Government and in accordance with the Land Use Act, acquired 1,025 hectares of land in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, for the overriding public purpose of developing the Abia Airport.
According to him, the affected Nsulu communities include Umuala, Umuomainta, Umuezeukwu, Umuode, Umuosu, and Ubaha.
“Full compensation has been paid to all landowners and farmers within the airport runway area, enabling project work to proceed. Payment to the remaining claimants outside the runway area began on February 23, 2026,” he stated.
To promote accountability, he said the government published and shared the compensation list and claims survey with the communities in December 2025 for vetting. Payments were paused until the review process was completed.
He further noted that specific concerns raised during a reconciliation meeting with community representatives, led by Rt. Hon. Uzo Azubuike, were thoroughly reviewed. Disputed claims, he added, are being investigated before any payments are made.
Chukwumerije also disclosed that a general town hall meeting was held on February 18, 2026, to brief the communities and announce the final phase of payments. He said residents were reassured that compensation would be paid in full.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to a transparent and fair compensation process, with zero tolerance for corruption.
According to him, any proven case of sharp practice will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
“Based on the payment schedule released, claimants are advised to report to the Ministry of Lands for due documentation and full payment of their compensation,” he said.
