After Insideoutnews Flood Report, ACTDA Cracks Down on Illegal Buildings in Awka

After a report by Insideoutnews on the devastating flood disaster in Ifite, Awka Capital Territory, the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has commenced the demolition of illegal structures obstructing waterways and drainage channels across the city.

Recall that Insideoutnews had earlier reported that the recent heavy rainfall submerged several buildings in the capital city, leaving many  families homeless.

In response to the incident and as part of efforts to prevent further flooding, the Authority has begun clearing blocked drainage systems and reopening water channels to ensure the free flow of water during rainfall.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Dr. Ossy Onuko, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He stated that the demolition exercise would affect all structures obstructing waterways, regardless of their size or ownership.

“The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) is currently carrying out enforcement operations, including the removal of illegal structures obstructing waterways and drainage channels within the Capital Territory,”.

“This action is in response to the increasing cases of flooding caused by blocked waterways.”he said.

He further warned land grabbers, developers, and property agents against the illegal sale or allocation of waterways to unsuspecting members of the public for any form of development.

“The Authority hereby issues a stern warning that any structure, regardless of size, found to be obstructing waterways or drainage channels will be removed without further delay,” Onuko added.

According to him, residents of the Capital Territory continue to suffer losses of lives and property during every rainy season due to flooding caused by blocked waterways and poorly maintained drainage systems.

He also warned that residents and shop owners who fail to clear and maintain the drainage channels in front of their homes or business premises may face sanctions from the Authority.
