Nnewi Power Struggle Deepens as Solution Team Demands Justice, Defends 1997 Rotation Pact

The debate over leadership, equity, and the future of Nnewi’s traditional political arrangement took centre stage on Sunday as the Nnewi Solution Team renewed its call for fairness, justice, and strict adherence to the 1997 Nnewi Rotational Agreement.
At its monthly meeting held on July 5, the group maintained that lasting peace, unity, and stability in Nnewi can only be achieved through equitable treatment of all communities and respect for existing agreements governing the town’s traditional leadership structure.
Convener of the team, Chief Gabriel Chukwuma (Gabros), reaffirmed the group’s commitment to ensuring that Nnewichi occupies what he described as its rightful position under the rotational arrangement.
He expressed concern that some members of the community were allegedly compromising Nnewichi’s collective interest for personal benefit, warning against actions that could undermine the community’s long-term aspirations.
According to him, individuals who accept inducements to betray the collective interest of their community may secure short-term gains but would ultimately leave future generations to bear the consequences of those decisions.
The meeting also featured strong expressions of support from prominent stakeholders, who insisted that the pursuit of justice and equity must remain paramount.
Chief Bennett Ngonadi commended the Solution Team for standing with the people of Nnewichi, arguing that recent developments within Nzukora Nnewi had fundamentally altered the relationship between the organisation and the Nnewichi community.
He referred to the suspension of the Secretary-General of Nzukora Nnewi, stating that the development prompted the Obi of Nnewichi, Obi Onyekaba, to declare that he also stood suspended alongside the affected official.
Prince Nnoso Obi described the growing political consciousness among the people of Nnewichi as encouraging, expressing optimism that the community had become more united in its pursuit of fairness, justice, and equitable representation.
He urged the Solution Team to remain resolute in its advocacy for what he described as a more inclusive and progressive Nnewi.
Several other speakers, including Chief Eugene Nwizugbe (Anyanwuigbo Niile); the member representing Nnewi North Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Augustine Ike Ikedoji; Prof. Obi Nwosu; Chief Emma Nsoedo; Chief James Okoye (Akachaam); Obejirinasaa; and Mr. Chukwudi Onwudiwe, echoed similar sentiments.
They maintained that they would continue to align with the position of the traditional ruler of Nnewi, insisting that the 1997 Rotational Agreement remains valid, binding, and deserving of full implementation.
The speakers further argued that Nzukora Nnewi had forfeited its moral authority when, according to them, it failed to respect the decision of the Igwe on the contentious issues surrounding the leadership dispute.
The meeting concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to the pursuit of justice, equity, and peaceful coexistence.
They expressed hope that sustained dialogue, mutual respect, and faithful adherence to the 1997 Rotational Agreement would strengthen unity, preserve harmony, and promote lasting stability across Nnewi.
