Battle for ABSU Vice-Chancellorship Begins as Search Team Inaugurated

The race for the office of the ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has commenced with the inauguration of a Search Team charged with identifying suitable candidates for the position.
The development was disclosed by the Media Unit of Abia State University, Uturu, in a statement published on the institution’s official Facebook page.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Dr. Agwu U. Agwu, recently inaugurated the Search Team during a brief ceremony held at the University’s Council Chamber.
Addressing members of the committee, Dr. Agwu explained that the exercise was conducted in accordance with Section 12(2)(b) of the Abia State University Law, which provides for the constitution of a Search Team to identify and nominate suitably qualified persons particularly indigenes of Abia State for consideration by the Governing Council for appointment as Vice-Chancellor.
He stated that the members were carefully selected by the Governing Council based on their integrity, experience, and track records, while ensuring representation of the various interest groups as stipulated by the law. He urged the committee members to work collaboratively with a shared sense of purpose in fulfilling their mandate.
“You are to approach this responsibility as a formidable team, while embracing transparency, diligence, and wide consultations in the task of searching for the most qualified academics who possess the commitment and capacity to lead a digital technology-driven university like ABSU in the 21st century,” he said.
The Pro-Chancellor congratulated the members on what he described as a well-deserved appointment to serve the University.
He urged them to identify a highly competent and visionary academic who would be capable of sustaining and advancing the institution’s progress after the expiration of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor.
Dr. Agwu also commended the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, for his dedication and commitment since assuming office. According to him, Professor Okeudo’s leadership has repositioned the University for accelerated growth in both its academic and administrative operations.
Responding on behalf of the committee, the Chairman of the Search Team, Professor Onwubiko Dike, expressed appreciation to the Pro-Chancellor and the Governing Council for the confidence reposed in the members.
He assured them that the committee would carry out its assignment with diligence and justify the trust placed in it.
Other members of the Search Team include Professor Anthony Obike; Professor Mary Oluchi Iwuagwu (Senate Representative); Professor Sam Agu (Senate Representative); Dr. Osita Igbe (Congregation Representative); and Dr. Uchenna Kalu Uduka (Representative of the Registrar), who will serve as Secretary.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by members of the Governing Council.
