Anambra Cracks Down on Child Beggar Centers, Renames Gov’t House ‘Light of the Nation’

The Anambra State Government has announced its decision to confiscate any building used as a camp or holding centre for child beggars within the state.
This directive follows a recent operation carried out by government operatives, which involved the raiding of several locations in Awka, particularly beneath the Aroma Bridge where child beggars were found seeking alms.
According to the state government, the rescued children will be enrolled in schools, as part of a broader initiative to eliminate child begging in the state capital.
It also warned that it would no longer tolerate such practices within its jurisdiction.
This position was made public in a statement issued by the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor.
Dr. Mefor further revealed that the new Anambra Government House will be officially named “Light House Awka”, reflecting the state’s long-standing slogan, “Light of the Nation.”
He stated:“Facilities used as holding places for child beggars are to be confiscated and sealed in compliance with extant laws.
The council resolved that, in accordance with the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025, any premises used as a holding centre for child beggars shall henceforth be sealed and forfeited to the government.”
Regarding the naming of the new government complex, Mefor added:
“After extensive deliberation, the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) unanimously adopted the name Light House Awka for the new Anambra Government House Mini City. The choice aligns with Anambra’s identity as the ‘Light of the Nation’.”
He said , during the same meeting, ANSEC approved several developmental projects, such as :”The construction of a factory warehouse for the processing of pharmaceutical-grade kaolin at the Kaolin Plant in Ukpor. The extension of the Nnewi Industrial Power Line and the supply and installation of a 750 KVA transformer at the Anambra State Kaolin Plant, Ukpor and the procurement and distribution of official uniforms and operational gear for the OCHA Brigade in Anambra State”
