President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has demanded an explanation from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over the failure to make any arrests following last Friday’s gruesome attacks in Benue State, which left nearly 200 people dead in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area.
The President questioned the Inspector General’s inability to apprehend the perpetrators of what he described as a heinous crime.
Tinubu made this known on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Benue Government House.
Expressing shock at the lack of arrests in the aftermath of the massacre, the President said:
“Police, I hope your men are on alert and listening for information. How come no arrest has been made? I expect that there should already be arrests of those criminals,” he told IGP.
The President, who was in the state to commiserate with victims and assess the security situation, also addressed the broader security and intelligence community including the military, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and the Department of State Services (DSS) urging coordinated efforts to ensure justice is served.
He said:“Christopher (the Chief of Defence Staff), you’ve given much. I’ve watched your statements, but you can’t be tired of staying in the bush. Oloyede and the Air Marshal, we thank you all, but we need to keep our ears to the ground. Let’s find those criminals and get them out. DG NIA, DG SSS, retool your information channels, and give us tangible intelligence to prevent this from happening again.”
