The Anambra State Government has announced plans to introduce a comprehensive code of conduct and operational guidelines for all government-backed security agencies in the state.

This move is aimed at ensuring professionalism, accountability, and civility in the conduct of their duties.

The government also revealed that there is an ongoing training programs , being conducted for local security operatives to equip them with modern skills and to reform their operational approach.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed this in a statement released after the 13th Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) meeting, held at the Light House, Awka, on Monday.

Dr. Mefor stated that the decision to establish a formal code of conduct followed recent public complaints regarding human rights abuses allegedly committed by personnel from some of the security outfits.

One such incident involved an operative of Agunechemba, a state security agency, who allegedly shot and killed a young girl during an operation targeting suspected criminals in a local community. The incident sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater oversight.

In response, the government reiterated its commitment to reforming the security sector. While commending the efforts of the various security agencies, the government emphasized the importance of ethical conduct and community-friendly enforcement.

“Recognising the need for enhanced security and better service delivery, the council (ANSEC) commended the performance of the state’s enforcement agencies, including Agunechemba, Ocha Brigade, and the Anti-Tout Squad,” Mefor stated.

“However, to further strengthen their capabilities and ensure greater accountability and responsiveness, the government has commenced additional training for all operatives. A formal Code of Conduct will be issued upon the completion of the training.”

Other resolutions from the council meeting included an expression of appreciation to the people of Anambra for their massive turnout at the grand opening of the Solution Fun City.

The council also approved new infrastructure projects. These include the award of a contract valued at ₦253,167,281.30 for the construction of Onwurah Street, located beside the Township Stadium in Awka.
