Hon. Azuka Okwuosa, a former Anambra State governorship aspirant, has emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming Anambra South Senatorial by-election scheduled for August 16.

Okwuosa, a seasoned politician and former chairman of a local government council, commissioner, and Secretary-General of the South-East Development Initiative, secured the party’s ticket after defeating Mr. Obinna Uzor in a closely contested primary.

The by-election is being held to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away a year ago in the United Kingdom.

The primary election, overseen by a seven-member committee from the APC national secretariat and chaired by Chief Henry Ikoh, saw Okwuosa garner 470 votes against Uzor’s 57.

A total of 594 delegates from the seven local government areas within the senatorial zone participated, with 22 votes declared invalid.

Announcing the results, Chief Ikoh stated:“By the authority vested in me by the Acting National Vice Chairman of the APC, I confirm that the election was conducted in the presence of INEC officials, security personnel, the media, and party delegates. The process was peaceful, and I hereby declare Hon. Azuka Okwuosa as the duly elected candidate.”

Speaking with journalists following his victory, Okwuosa expressed both gratitude and solemn reflection:“I am honoured to have been elected as the party’s candidate. However, my joy is tempered by the circumstances—the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. He was a remarkable senator who achieved a lot in a short time. His legacy presents a challenge I intend to take up.”

Born on November 3, 1959, in Jos, Plateau State, Okwuosa hails from a devout Christian family in Anambra State. A prominent figure in Anambra’s political landscape, he previously contested for governor under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He also briefly belonged to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) between 1999 and 2003 before joining the APC, citing the party’s alignment with his vision for the state’s progress.

Known for his diplomatic acumen and conflict-resolution skills, Okwuosa has often played a mediating role during political tensions. He is respected across party lines for his consistent advocacy of peaceful coexistence and principled leadership. Within the APC, he is widely regarded as a strategic thinker and a dependable problem solver.

Okwuosa’s previous political appointments include serving as chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Council, Commissioner for Works and Transport in Anambra State, and Secretary-General of the South-East Development Initiative from 2002 to 2010.
