Ohanaeze Ndigbo Issues Stark Warning to Peter Obi, Challenges North on 2027 Votes

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, under the leadership of Deputy President General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, has issued a stern warning about the dangers of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, luring the Igbo people into premature and ill-prepared political contests.

Such moves, Ohanaeze says, pose a significant threat to the collective political survival of the Igbo nation.

Ohanaeze also cautioned Northern political stakeholders against entrusting Mr. Obi with their votes in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

In a statement released by Deputy President General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the organization stressed that Mr. Obi currently lacks the political resilience and strategic ruthlessness required to defeat the incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. The statement warned that engaging the Igbo in an ill-conceived political battle under Obi’s leadership could render the Igbo people political sacrificial lambs, further reinforcing the perception of the Igbo as Nigeria’s most vulnerable ethnic group.

The statement reads in part:“With the utmost respect and unflinching candor, we must say that Mr. Peter Obi does not presently possess the political tenacity or the tactical acumen necessary to unseat a seasoned and entrenched incumbent such as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

“To allow the Igbo people to be drawn into poorly strategized political confrontations under Obi’s leadership would be catastrophic, posing a dire threat to our collective future. Such a scenario risks reducing us to political sacrificial lambs, deepening the stigma that identifies us as the most endangered ethnic group in Nigeria should Obi falter in his electoral pursuits.

“It is imperative to reflect on a troubling question: Why are the Igbos frequently marginalized and viewed with suspicion in Nigeria? Can we truly understand how a people once celebrated for illustrious leaders such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dr. Michael Okpara, Dr. Francis Akanu Ibiam, and Dr. Jaja Wachuku, have been relegated from prominence to political obscurity—now perceived as a ‘majority within a minority’?

“This sobering reality demands our immediate attention. The political miscalculations by figures like Mr. Obi have contributed substantially to our current predicament. We must confront this uncomfortable truth: the Igbo people are exhausted by over a decade of ineffective opposition politics under his leadership.

“In response to inquiries from three Northern groups about the possible revival of the Eastern-Northern Alliance of the First Republic and concerns over Mr. Obi’s alleged associations with secessionist activists in the Southeast, we wish to state our position unequivocally.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains open to any political arrangement that will allow the Igbo to pursue legitimate economic and social interests without discriminatory state policies or unjust targeting as an endangered community. We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to Nigeria’s unity and pledge loyalty to the Nigerian Constitution and all constitutionally elected offices, including the presidency currently held by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Regarding the Northern leadership’s concerns about Mr. Obi’s trustworthiness with political power and his capacity to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity and dignity as a united country, we must express our reservations frankly.

“Mr. Obi’s past actions and inactions raise serious doubts about his ability to preserve Nigeria’s unity. Should he attain the presidency, the very fabric of our nation risks fragmentation into three separate entities.

“As Nigeria approaches the crucial 2027 elections, we call on all stakeholders to engage in sober reflection about the long-term consequences of their political choices. The future of our great nation depends on prudent decision-making and an unwavering dedication to unity.”
