The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, marked her 55th birthday on Thursday by visiting patients in hospitals, settling medical bills, and spreading joy through acts of compassion.
Dr. Soludo, wife of Governor Charles Soludo, visited three hospitals across the state, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka; Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi; and Okpoko General Hospital, Onitsha. During the visits, she interacted warmly with patients, offered them prayers, and gave undisclosed financial support to them.
Residents at Okpoko General Hospital erupted in jubilation upon her arrival, singing praises for her and the governor. At all three facilities, she was warmly received, with many addressing her as “Mama Anambra” and praising her simplicity and compassion.
Speaking with journalists afterward, the founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, the first Lady of Anambra State explained that she has a long-standing tradition of celebrating her birthdays not with parties, but with visits to hospitals and homes for the less privileged.

“Each year, I spend my birthday with the sick, the motherless, and the vulnerable. It is my way of reflecting on the true meaning of human existence, showing love, giving hope, and putting smiles on people’s faces,” she said.

When asked how many patients’ bills she had paid during the visit, she replied:
“I honestly don’t know. I lost count. I just wanted to touch lives in whatever way I could.”

Dr. Soludo noted that bringing happiness to others is her greatest source of joy.
“My happiest moments are when I see people smile. That is all I need to feel fulfilled. With what I have done today, I consider my birthday celebration complete whatever comes after is just extra,” she said.
She also revealed that this tradition began long before her marriage.
“Even during my single years, I celebrated with orphans, the sick, and the poor. I have never really been one for parties. If you see me organizing a birthday gathering, it is usually something low-key with my family or close friends. Celebrating with the less privileged has always been a part of me.” she added.
Dr. Soludo encouraged well-meaning individuals to find time to bring joy to others, no matter how small the effort.
“Making people smile doesn’t cost much, sometimes all it takes is your presence. Even helping an old woman find a place to sleep is an act of love.”Mrs Soludo said.
She expressed deep appreciation for the medical staff at Okpoko General Hospital, commending their dedication and the hospital’s cleanliness.
“Iam impressed by how neat the environment is. May the Almighty bless and continue to strengthen the doctors and nurses here for their hard work,” she added.
Later that evening, during a private celebration at the Light of the Nation Lodge, the Anambra State Government House, Governor Charles Soludo expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the day’s activities.
According to the governor, several good-spirited individuals donated funds used to offset medical bills and support widows and the less privileged in the celebration.
“This birthday is not just about celebrating a person, it is a moment of charity and reflection,” he said.
He expressed heartfelt thanks to all who made the day a success and reflected on his good fortune in marrying Dr. Soludo.
“I knew I was blessed the day she said yes to me. And today, seeing how she continues to impact lives, I am even more certain of that.”he added.
