The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the reassignment of Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to strategic locations across the state ahead of the forthcoming Anambra South Senatorial District and Onitsha North I Constituency by-elections.
CP Orutugu also charged officers deployed for election duties to act professionally and maintain strict neutrality throughout the electoral process.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the move is aimed at reinforcing police neutrality, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring maximum security before, during, and after the polls.
The statement reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring the safety of voters, election officials, and electoral materials.
It further noted that the Commissioner of Police had emphasized the need for all officers assigned to election duties to discharge their responsibilities with the highest levels of professionalism, impartiality, and adherence to the rule of law.
CP Orutugu warned that any breach of the Police Code of Conduct or actions capable of undermining the peaceful conduct of the election would attract strict disciplinary sanctions.
The Command also urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to cooperate with security agencies and refrain from any actions that could incite violence or disrupt the electoral process. Voters were encouraged to turn out peacefully and exercise their civic rights without fear of intimidation.
The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its duty to provide a safe and secure environment for free, fair, and credible elections in Anambra State.
