The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has once again demonstrated its stronghold and significance in Anambra State politics as Barrister Ifeoma Mimi Azikiwe, the party’s candidate for the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency by-election, has been declared the winner with a substantial lead.

The by-election, held on Saturday, is seen by political analysts as a testament to the popularity of Governor Charles Soludo’s leadership under APGA. The results reinforce the popular slogan: “Anambra is APGA, and APGA is Anambra,” highlighting the party’s dominance in the state.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Professor Ibiam Ekpe, Azikiwe secured 7,774 votes, comfortably defeating the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Mrs. Justice Azuka, who received 1,909 votes.

The APC candidate, Mr. Ezennia Chuka Ojekwe, and Young Progressive Party (YPP) candidate, Ms. Njideka Ndiwe, garnered 1,371 and 655 votes respectively.

Prof. Ekpe, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), commended all contestants for their peaceful conduct and applauded the voters for their high turnout.

Azikiwe will serve the remaining two years of the late Justice Azuka’s term. Justice Azuka was tragically kidnapped on December 24, 2024, and was later found deceased near the 2nd Niger Bridge on February 6, 2025.

Upon her inauguration by the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr. Somtochukwu Udeze, Azikiwe will become the second female legislator in the eighth Assembly. The Assembly, inaugurated in June 2023, previously had only one female member, Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi of Anaocha 1 State Constituency, representing the Labour Party (LP).
