Moghalu Decries Assault,Stripping of Female Corps Member in Anambra, Urges FG to Take Action
Dr. George Moghalu
The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate for the forthcoming Anambra State election, Dr. George Moghalu, has called on the Federal Government to intervene in the rising cases of brutality against innocent citizens allegedly perpetrated by operatives of the Anambra Vigilante Services, popularly known as Udogachi.
Addressing journalists at his campaign office in Awka, the state capital, Moghalu condemned a trending video showing Udogachi operatives allegedly assaulting and stripping a female corps member naked.
The victim, identified as Ms. Jennifer Elohor, is said to have been beaten and stripped at the NYSC lodge in Idemili South Local Government Area by the local security outfit.
Moghalu called for the immediate disbandment of the vigilante group, stating that doing so is the only way to restore sanity and ensure human rights are respected in the state.
“Increasing incidents of brutality by this group are deeply troubling,” “The Federal Government must urgently step in to scrutinize and regulate the operations of this outfit.
“The Federal Government should make an official statement on this matter. That young woman is on national assignment and deserves protection from both state and federal authorities. What I saw in that video was heartbreaking. It is not just scandalous for Anambra State but for every responsible citizen of this country.
“Whatever the young lady may have done, there are lawful procedures to follow. She should have been arrested appropriately and handed over to the police—not brutalized, stripped, and humiliated in such a degrading manner.
“I stand firmly by my earlier calls: Udogachi should be disbanded. These individuals are clearly untrained. They need to be properly trained and reoriented before being allowed to function as security operatives. You can’t deploy untrained people to enforce security; it leads to abuse.”he said .
He further said that the group has become notorious for violence, extortion, and abuse of power.
“This is one case too many,” “They have killed, threatened, and extorted citizens, and I find that completely unacceptable.” Moghalu stated.
Moghalu also expressed concern over the whereabouts of the assaulted corps member, despite reports that the operatives involved had been arrested.
“Where is the victim?” “The government must produce her and allow her to speak publicly about her ordeal. We live in a civilized society. The fact that she is a corps member makes this situation even more grievous, she was simply serving her country.”he queried.
He further alleged that the Udogachi vigilante group was established primarily to serve political interests in the upcoming gubernatorial election, particularly in favor of the incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.
“The Federal Government must ensure adequate security during the November election. It is now evident that the Udogachi were created as a political tool to influence the electoral process. Their actions during the last Saturday election made that very clear,” he added.
