UNIZIK in Turmoil as Viral Video Shows Male Lecturer Allegedly Assaulted Over Sexual Misconduct Claim

A viral video circulating widely on social media has captured the alleged assault of a lecturer of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, following an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student.

In the video, a female student, who appeared to be partially dressed, was heard shouting and calling for help, while a voice identified the man as a lecturer.

Shortly afterwards, some male students reportedly descended on the lecturer, beating him, stripping him and dragging him on the ground.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday, August 15, 2026, within the university environment, has generated tension and apprehension among students and members of the university community.

The lecturer involved has been identified as Prof. Sunny Odinye of the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, UNIZIK.

One of the students in a voice note said that the lecturer was trying to molest a female student in his office.

According to the voice note ,the lecturer caught the female student in exam malpractice and when the girl was invited to his office,he gave her the exam malpractice form to sign and she signed.

“After he collected the girl’s number and started calling her.

The girl was asking him how he wanted her to pay, either in cash or kind. He told her any how she wants to pay,she should choose and the girls choose to pay in cash.
The man refused to send the account detail neither did he give the girl any means of paying in cash,rather he invited the girls to his office on Friday and she made some payments. Later he insisted that she should come back on Saturday.The girl came with some student when she realized that the man wanted to exploit her sexually.

When the man made his intention known to the girl,the girl said that she can’t go that far and urged lecturer to submit the malpractice form and the man grabbed her and on the process of trying to rape her she started shouting and the shouting attracted those she came with,they opened the office,the man ran out nake” the voice noted.

According to the voice note,Unizik is trying to subdue this incident, noting that the few people that videoed the incident the university collected their phone and edited them .

The voice further said Only a few of them that they could not have access to their phones decide to spread the incident to public.

“We female students in this University are seeing a lot from the lecturer and this man has been doing this for a very long time” the voice note stated.

Reacting to the incident in a statement titled, “Viral Video of Assault on Lecturer Over Alleged Attempted Sexual Misconduct: UNIZIK Management Condemns Action, Orders Full-Scale Investigation,” the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University said it had received reports of the alleged physical assault of a lecturer following an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student of the institution.

The statement was issued on Saturday by the Director of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Comrade Aloysius Emeka Attah.

According to the statement, videos of the incident, which occurred within the university environment on Saturday, August 15, 2026, have since gone viral across various social media platforms.

The university management said it was deeply saddened by the incident and strongly condemned the resort to violence, self-help or any form of jungle justice, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the allegation.

The statement noted that the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, had consistently reaffirmed the institution’s zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct, harassment and all forms of inappropriate behaviour.

At the same time, the management stressed that allegations of misconduct must be addressed through established institutional procedures and due process, noting that no individual or group was permitted to take the law into their own hands within the university environment.

“Given the seriousness of the matter, the University Management has directed that an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation be conducted to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The matter is currently under full review, with the appropriate administrative processes activated to ensure that justice is served fairly and objectively to all parties involved.
“The University remains firmly committed to protecting the dignity, safety and wellbeing of its staff and students and will continue to take decisive action against any conduct that violates these principles.
“Further pronouncements and developments on the matter shall be communicated in due course,” the statement added.
The university’s position underscores the need for the allegations to be thoroughly investigated while ensuring that the rights, safety and dignity of all parties involved are protected throughout the process” it added.
