Telemedicine Offers Broader Ways To Tackle Health Challenges – Anambra Government

The Anambra State Government has renewed its call for residents to embrace telemedicine services as part of broader efforts to expand access to healthcare delivery across the state.
Speaking during an interactive session with 42 doctors engaged in the programme, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, emphasized the numerous benefits of telemedicine. According to him, the practice is not only cost-effective but also significantly reduces the need for physical contact, allowing patients to consult doctors virtually, receive medical advice, and obtain prescriptions from the comfort of their homes.
Dr. Obidike explained that the telemedicine initiative, introduced by the Ministry of Health, was designed to bridge critical healthcare gaps, particularly in rural and underserved communities where access to hospitals and clinics is limited.
He described the digital approach as both lifesaving and efficient, especially in emergency situations and areas with weak healthcare infrastructure.
Reaffirming the state government’s commitment to strengthening the scheme, the commissioner warned against any attempts to undermine its success.
He made it clear that individuals or officials found obstructing the effective implementation of the programme would face disciplinary action, including possible removal from the State Health Agency.
To enhance the system’s effectiveness, Dr. Obidike revealed that doctors under the programme would undergo periodic retraining to upgrade their skills in telemedicine technologies and align with the platform’s evolving objectives.
He added that the government remains committed to investing in digital infrastructure, stable internet connectivity, and technical support to ensure seamless service delivery.
Commending the dedication of the young medical professionals driving the initiative, the commissioner noted that their passion and commitment were central to delivering modern healthcare solutions through digital platforms.
During the session, Dr. Chinonso Nwosu from Njikoka Local Government Area highlighted several challenges facing the initiative.
He pointed to administrative lapses among some officers in charge, as well as poor device-handling skills among certain personnel. He stressed the need for improved coordination and practical training to address these deficiencies.
In a similar vein, Dr. Chieze Collins from Anambra East Local Government Area urged the government to intensify public sensitization campaigns to raise awareness about the availability and benefits of telemedicine.
He recommended leveraging multiple media channels, including television, radio, and newspapers, to promote the programme and encourage wider participation.
