Eight operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), attached to the BUA Cement Factory in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, were ambushed and killed by gunmen on Friday night.
According to a statement issued in Benin City by the agency’s spokesperson, Ogbebor Efosa, the attack occurred on Friday, August 5, 2025, at approximately 10:00 p.m., as the officers were escorting five Chinese expatriates following a routine patrol near the company’s entrance.
Efosa disclosed that the suspected kidnappers, heavily armed with sophisticated weapons, ambushed the NSCDC operatives and opened fire.
“The attackers laid an ambush at the company’s entrance and opened fire sporadically, engaging our operatives in a fierce gun duel,” “Despite the tragic loss of personnel, our operatives managed to rescue four of the expatriates.”he said.
He further stated that the assailants abducted one of the Chinese expatriates and fled into the nearby forest. Four individuals, including NSCDC personnel, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
A civilian was also reported to be critically injured in the attack.
“The surviving NSCDC officers repelled additional attacks and successfully secured the safety of four expatriates,” Efosa added.
He confirmed that the Edo State Commandant of the NSCDC, Agun Gbenga, had visited both the scene of the incident and the hospital where the injured are being treated.
Efosa also revealed that a joint security operation involving other sister agencies has been launched to track down the kidnappers.
“As I speak to you, our personnel, along with other security agencies, are combing the forest through which the assailants escaped. Every effort is being made to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted expatriate and to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said.
