The Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Senate, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has flagged off the distribution of educational materials to schools across Ebonyi State.
The items distributed include reading desks, exercise books, and textbooks aimed at improving learning conditions in primary and secondary schools across four local government areas in the Ebonyi North Senatorial District.
According to the Senator, a total of 6,000 pupils will benefit from 2,000 units of 3-in-1 desk-and-chair sets, while over 1,500 secondary school students received textbooks in General English and Mathematics.
Some of the textbooks and writing materials were handed directly to students who attended the distribution event, while headmasters and principals of both public and private schools in the district were given the reading desks for use in their respective schools.
The event took place on Saturday at the Ohaukwu Local Government Headquarters.
Speaking at the event, Senator Nwebonyi said the initiative was part of his effort to bridge the gap in educational inequality, especially in rural communities where pupils are still forced to sit on the floor to learn.
He also stated that the intervention was meant to complement the efforts of Governor Francis Nwifuru in tackling illiteracy and reducing the number of out-of-school children in the state.
“The development of every society depends on the quality of education given to its children, because today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders,”
“This is why I have procured these desks, exercise books, and textbooks to support learning in our schools and to reinforce the state government’s commitment to ending illiteracy.
“Our primary school pupils who previously sat on the floor to learn will now have proper desks. Those who had dropped out due to lack of writing materials can now return to school with access to free textbooks.”Nwebonyi said.
Highlighting his achievements since assuming office in 2023, the lawmaker listed the construction of over 16 kilometers of concrete roads across the four local government areas in the district, the distribution of vehicles, motorcycles, and agricultural processing machines, as well as the award of scholarships to more than 300 students.
He also revealed that work is set to begin on the 12-kilometer Ogudu–Odumoke road in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, noting that contracts for the first two kilometers had already been awarded.
“We are determined to set a record that will be difficult if not impossible to surpass. As we move into the 2025 budget year, more of such interventions will be rolled out,” he assured.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha, commended Senator Nwebonyi for what he described as effective and impactful representation.
He called on constituents to continue supporting the APC and its leaders for sustained development.
