SWAN Criticizes State Govts for Neglecting Youth Development Through Sports

By Ikemefuna Asika

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the failure of some state governments to invest deliberately in human capital development, particularly through engaging the youth in sports-related activities.

This position was outlined in a communiqué issued at the conclusion of the Association’s National Convention, held during the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State.

SWAN noted that this lack of commitment contributed to the low or complete absence of participation by several states including Ebonyi, Gombe, Zamfara, Borno, and Kebbi in the 9th edition of the NYG.

Beyond youth empowerment, the Association emphasized the critical role of sports in curbing insecurity and enhancing the overall well-being of citizens.

The Association also lauded the National Sports Commission for its sustained organization of the National Youth Games.

However, it urged the Commission’s leadership to adopt more effective strategies to combat age-cheating, in order to preserve the integrity and developmental objectives of grassroots sports.

SWAN also commended the Delta State Government for successfully hosting the recently concluded NYG and encouraged subsequent host states to improve on areas where gaps were observed.

The Association congratulated Lagos State for emerging as the overall winner of the competition for the first time. It also commended key stakeholders for their exceptional contributions to sports development and media engagement, including Honourable Amadin Desmond Enabulele (Chairman, Edo State Sports Commission), Honourable Wasiu Isiaka (Ogun State Commissioner of Sports), and Engineer Musa Nimrod (President, Nigeria Volleyball Federation).

Part of the communiqué read:
“While wishing the Enugu State Government success in hosting the 2026 National Sports Festival, SWAN emphasizes the need for timely upgrades and renovation of sports facilities in preparation for the biennial event.”

SWAN also reiterated its longstanding call for the inclusion of its chapter chairpersons in the Local Organising Committees (LOC) for the Sports Festival, as was the practice in previous editions.

Furthermore, the Association urged state governments to facilitate easier access for sports journalists covering sporting activities within their respective jurisdictions.

In a bid to promote professionalism and ensure robust membership engagement, SWAN encouraged its members to update their registrations and renewals to enable smooth access to national competitions and related privileges. It also charged chapter leaderships across states to prioritize the inclusion of women in the coverage of national sporting events.

The Association called on all members to begin preparations for its 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary, slated for October 2025, and appealed for sponsorships and partnerships to ensure the success of the landmark celebration.
