Major Boost for Anambra Football as NFF Approves Federation Cup Quarter-Final in Awka
The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (FA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, has commended the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for approving the Awka Township Stadium as the venue for the President Federation Cup quarter-final match between Barau FC and Ikorodu City FC.
Iloenyosi, popularly known as General or De General, gave the commendation in Anambra State, describing the NFF’s decision as a strong vote of confidence in the state’s growing capacity to host top-tier national football competitions.
The former Super Eagles defender called on sports lovers, football enthusiasts, and residents across the state to turn out in large numbers to witness the highly anticipated quarter-final encounter scheduled for Thursday, June 11, at the Awka Township Stadium, with kick-off set for 4:00 p.m.
According to him, the choice of Awka as the host venue further underscores the state’s rising profile in Nigerian football. He noted that the successful hosting of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match between Nasarawa United and Rivers United on Saturday, June 6, is a clear indication of the growing confidence stakeholders have in Anambra’s sporting infrastructure and organizational capacity.
Iloenyosi expressed optimism that staging high-profile football matches in the state would not only boost sports development but also provide meaningful engagement for young people, thereby complementing the efforts of the Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led administration in tackling insecurity and other social vices.
“Football remains a powerful tool for youth engagement, talent discovery, and social integration. Bringing major matches to Anambra will inspire young players and create positive avenues for recreation and development,” he said.
The Anambra FA Chairman also lauded the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Agha-Mba, for his commitment and unwavering support toward the growth and development of football in the state.
He further emphasized the readiness of the Anambra State FA to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development to strengthen grassroots football, identify emerging talents, and create pathways for young players to achieve their full potential.
Iloenyosi expressed confidence that through sustained partnership and strategic investment in football development, Anambra State can become a leading hub for talent production and football excellence in Nigeria.
