DIG Benjamin Okolo
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the just concluded Anambra State gubernatorial election, DIG Benjamin Okolo, has conveyed the appreciation of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun (NPM), to all officers and personnel of the various security agencies who participated in ensuring the peaceful conduct of the election.
DIG Okolo, who was deployed to oversee security operations during the election, described the exercise as credible and largely peaceful, while acknowledging that there were a few isolated incidents that were promptly contained by security operatives.
“We are happy that the elections have come and gone peacefully. By and large, it was orderly, and security operatives conducted themselves with utmost professionalism. The political parties and their candidates also demonstrated a commendable spirit of sportsmanship and brotherhood,” he stated.
The DIG emphasized that the police and other security agencies remained neutral and apolitical throughout the process, maintaining their constitutional role as impartial guarantors of peace, law, and order.
“As a law enforcement agency, we are not interested in which political party or candidate wins. Our primary concern is to ensure the peaceful, free, fair, and transparent conduct of the election,” he added.
Okolo further commended the professionalism and dedication of police personnel and other sister security agencies for their collaborative efforts, noting that the success of the election was a collective achievement.
“We salute our officers and men for their professionalism and commitment. The success recorded would not have been possible without the cooperation of other security agencies. The credit goes to all the service commands in Anambra State,” he said.
The DIG also applauded the political parties and their candidates for maintaining decorum and mutual respect during and after the election.
“The politicians and their supporters must be commended for the maturity and restraint they exhibited. They showed that beyond politics, they are brothers and sisters from the same Anambra State,” he concluded.
