Umueri PG Commends Anambra-East Chairman for Conducting Free Medical Mission

  1. The President-General of the Umueri General Assembly in Anambra-East Local Government Area of Anambra State, Amb. Dr. John Metchie, has commended the Chairman of Anambra-East Local Government Council, Hon. Ifeanyi Chinweze, for organizing a five-day free medical outreach in the area.

Describing the initiative as a life-saving programme aimed at expanding access to comprehensive healthcare at the grassroots, Metchie stated that the free medical mission aligns with Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s broader reforms in the health sector.

He noted that the upgrade of the Umueri General Hospital where the outreach was held is a clear testament to the governor’s commitment.

Metchie, who praised Mayor Chinweze’s developmental achievements, stressed that his administration has brought visible transformation to Anambra-East, with Umueri community among its beneficiaries.

He explained that although the free medical exercise was capital intensive, the chairman ensured that all services—including treatments, surgeries, and drugs—were provided completely free of charge to everyone who participated.

The Umueri President-General also commended the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, for his involvement in the outreach.

He noted that the commissioner’s efforts in revitalizing the health sector are evident in the renovation and refurbishment of primary healthcare facilities across the 326 political wards in the state, as well as the construction of new general hospitals in Anambra-North Senatorial District.

He added that the Umueri General Hospital continues to receive significant government support.

Amb. Metchie equally expressed gratitude to the Senior Medical Officer in charge of Umueri General Hospital, Dr. Chinenye John Peter Obi, who confirmed that all patients who participated in the five-day medical outreach were treated entirely free of charge, including those who underwent surgeries and received medications.

Metchie emphasized the need for such medical programmes to be conducted more regularly in order to reach the poor and vulnerable in remote areas, thereby providing them with access to quality and comprehensive healthcare services and reducing their reliance on quacks and unqualified practitioners due to poverty or ignorance.

He also applauded the state government’s free antenatal and child delivery services, describing these social welfare interventions as genuinely people-oriented. Metchie reiterated the Anambra-East Local Government’s commitment under Hon. Ifeanyi Chinweze to meeting the health needs of local residents. He further commended the chairman for sponsoring the free medical outreach, which began on December 2 and ended on December 6 at the Umueri General Hospital.
