Anambra SWAN Begins 2025 Week with Medical Outreach for Journalists on Thursday
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra Chapter, will on Thursday hold a medical outreach for journalists as part of its activities marking the 2025 End-of-Year celebrations.
SWAN Week is an annual event during which the chapter reflects on developments in the sports sector in the outgoing year and confers recognition on deserving personalities and friends of sports.
The theme for this year’s event is “Sudden Death Phenomenon: Why Fitness Alone Is Not Enough,” with “Positioning Anambra for a Multi-Million-Dollar Sports Economy” as the sub-theme.
Speaking on the programme, Chimezie Anaso, Chairman of SWAN in Anambra, said this year’s edition would feature a medical outreach for members, sports activities, and lectures.
Anaso noted that recognition would be given to individuals who have contributed to sports development in Anambra, as well as to those who have supported SWAN’s activities.
He explained that the medical outreach, scheduled for Thursday, December 11, is being organised in collaboration with Rock Foundation Hospital, a leading private medical facility in Awka.
The sports events, lectures, and recognition ceremony will take place on Friday, Dec. 12, also in Awka.
The Chairman said the focus this year is on the health and well-being of journalists and sportsmen and women, stressing that people must be in good health to perform their roles effectively in society.
According to him, there is a strong nexus between sports and well-being, as people engage in sports for various reasons, including maintaining good health.
“This is why non-career sportsmen and women take to the streets, the football pitch, courts, and the gym in a bid to keep fit.
“Sadly, we have cases where very active and agile people drop dead even while working out. Professional footballers have slumped and died on the pitch.
“So, the lecturer, who is a medical doctor, will be giving us professional perspectives on fitness and healthy living—particularly the role of medical checks. It promises to be engaging and educative,” he said.
Anaso urged members of the sports community to take part as SWAN celebrates sports in Anambra.
