Electricity Consumers Laud Aba Power for Exceeding 2025 Meter Rollout Target

Electricity consumers in Nigeria have commended Aba Power, the country’s newest electricity distribution company (DisCo), for recording an unprecedented achievement in customer metering in 2025.
According to an electricity pressure group, Aba Power installed more smart meters in 2025 than the other 11 electricity distribution companies in Nigeria combined.
In a statement issued on Thursday following its first executive committee meeting of the year in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, the South-East zonal leadership of the Electricity Consumers Association of Nigeria (ECAN) disclosed that all 12 DisCos nationwide installed a total of 175,302 meters under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme and 44,104 prepaid meters under the vendor-financed framework as of the third quarter of 2025.
The figures, ECAN noted, were drawn from a recent Punch newspaper report based on data supplied by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
“Aba Power alone installed over 100,000 smart meters for end-users by the end of September 2025,” the association stated.
The statement was jointly signed by the South-East zonal chairman of ECAN, Engineer Joe Ubani, and its secretary, Comrade Chris Okpara. The group said its figures were based on monthly data submitted to NERC by Aba Power’s Head of Metering, Engineer Alfred Atega.
“This means that Aba Power surpassed its 2025 target of installing 100,000 smart meters—an ambitious goal that many analysts initially regarded as unrealistic,”
“More significantly, the data confirms that Aba Power, despite being Nigeria’s youngest DisCo and the smallest in terms of population coverage and geographical spread—serving only nine of Abia State’s 17 local government areas—installed more prepaid meters than the other 11 DisCos combined.”ECAN said.
The other DisCos, ECAN recalled, were carved out of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and privatized in November 2013, although the Federal Government retains a 40 per cent equity stake in each.
The consumer association further revealed that Aba Power installed a total of 122,464 prepaid meters by the end of 2025 through vendor-financing arrangements with four Chinese and Nigerian metering companies.
Of this number, 116,883 were single-phase meters, while 5,581 were three-phase meters.
Quoting Aba Power’s Senior Brand and Communications Manager, Mr. Edise Ekong, ECAN explained that the utility successfully metered all 122,464 customers connected to 27 feeders in and around Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State.
“We have since increased the number of metered customers to 133,000 this year,” Ekong, who is also an engineer, was quoted as saying.
He added that metering work is ongoing on three feeders—the Omoba Feeder, the Geometric Feeder, and the Polymer Feeder—which are currently undergoing system repairs and rehabilitation.
“Customers connected to these feeders will be metered immediately after the completion of the repair and upgrade works,” he said.
Meanwhile, Aba Power’s remarkable achievements in large-scale meter deployment and improved power reliability have continued to attract commendation from key stakeholders in Aba’s business and residential communities.
Chief Alphonsus Udeigbo, President-General of the Abia Amalgamated Traders Association, attributed the renewed interest of investors in the state to Aba’s emergence as one of Nigeria’s cities with the most reliable electricity supply.
“Investors behind projects such as the 12-storey Marriott Hotel in Aba GRA and the Enyimba Economic City would not have responded so positively to Governor Alex Otti’s investment drive if the electricity challenge had not been largely addressed,” Udeigbo said.
Similarly, the President-General of the Aba Landlords Protection and Development Association, Engineer Leo Emesirim, told journalists that Aba is poised to reclaim its position as Nigeria’s leading centre for indigenous manufacturing.
“With steady and high-quality power supply, Aba is set for industrial resurgence,” he said.
“The Abia State Government clearly understands the critical role of electricity in development and has therefore worked closely with Aba Power and the people of Abia to elevate the state to a new level of economic competitiveness.”
