Abia Govt Distributes Assistive Devices to 85 Persons with Disabilities
The Abia State Government, through the Abia State Disability Commission, has distributed wheelchairs and other assistive devices to 85 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the state.

The presentation ceremony, which took place in Umuahia on Friday, marked the first phase of the government’s assistive support programme aimed at improving the welfare and inclusion of PWDs.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Commission, Mr. David Anyaele, said the initiative was designed to promote inclusivity, enhance mobility, and improve the overall quality of life of persons living with disabilities in the state.
Anyaele explained that 85 beneficiaries were selected for the first phase of the distribution, adding that the exercise underscores the state government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups and ensuring that no segment of society is left behind.
According to him, the provision of assistive devices would enable beneficiaries to live with dignity and self-respect, while also empowering them to participate more actively in social and economic activities within their communities.
“These assistive devices will enhance mobility, independence, and meaningful participation in community life for persons with physical disabilities,” he said.
The Commission chairman commended Governor Alex Otti for his consistent commitment to disability inclusion, noting that the governor had directed all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to mainstream disability concerns in their policies, programmes, and activities.
He further disclosed that from 2026, all MDAs would be required to demonstrate how persons with disabilities benefit from their projects, in line with the state’s Disability Law.
In a vote of thanks on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. David Onuoha expressed profound appreciation to the state government, describing the gesture as unprecedented in Abia State.
“This has never happened before in Abia. We are deeply grateful and very happy,” he said.
He pledged the unalloyed support of persons with disabilities to Governor Otti’s administration.
