AFC Stakeholders Hail Soludo as Architect of the Corporation
Stakeholders at the 2026 African Finance Corporation (AFC) Staff Retreat held in Lagos have hailed the pivotal role played by the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Soludo, in the founding of the Corporation.
Speakers at the retreat recalled Governor Soludo’s early conceptual blueprint and sustained advocacy, noting that his contributions were instrumental in laying a strong foundation for the institution’s growth and its continent-wide impact. They underscored his role as one of the principal architects whose vision helped shape the AFC into a leading African-led development finance institution.
Professor Soludo, who served as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria at the time of the AFC’s formation, joined other prominent African leaders at the retreat on Tuesday to help shape the institution’s future strategic direction.
At the event, Governor Soludo shared the stage with former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR; Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Mr. Tony Elumelu; and other key stakeholders and leaders associated with the Corporation.
The retreat brought together the AFC’s founders, principal architects, and senior management to reflect on the institution’s journey since inception, reaffirm its core mission, and collectively chart strategic priorities for the years ahead—particularly in infrastructure financing and sustainable economic development across the African continent.
Governor Soludo’s participation highlighted the critical importance of visionary leadership, institutional memory, and sustained collaboration in building robust, African-led financial institutions capable of mobilising capital at scale to drive inclusive growth and long-term development across Africa.
