Onitsha Main Market Closed: ANIAS Calls for Calm Among Non-Indigenes
The Association of Non-Indigenes in Anambra State (ANIAS) has appealed to all non-indigenes residing and conducting business in the state to remain calm and law-abiding following the closure of the Onitsha Main Market.
The President of ANIAS, Prince Chigozie Nweke, made the appeal in reaction to the Anambra State Government’s decision to shut the market after traders failed to open for business on Monday, in defiance of the governor’s directive.
Governor Charles Soludo had earlier warned that the state government would not tolerate the closure of markets or business establishments under the guise of the sit-at-home order allegedly enforced by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
On Monday, the governor ordered the closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week after traders disobeyed the directive to open for normal commercial activities.
Reacting to the development, Prince Nweke urged ANIAS members to respect constituted authority and comply fully with the directive shutting down the market.
He acknowledged that the temporary closure may pose economic challenges but stressed that non-indigenes must conduct themselves responsibly and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions or disrupting public order.
He cautioned against any act that violates the laws of Anambra State or defies the directives of the state government, warning that anyone who disobeys lawful orders would face the full weight of the law.
The ANIAS President specifically advised non-indigenes against participating in protests, demonstrations, or any form of unrest in or around the Onitsha Main Market over the closure, noting that such actions could jeopardize peace and security in the state.
Prince Nweke reaffirmed the association’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and cooperation with the Anambra State Government, emphasizing that dialogue and lawful engagement remain the most effective means of addressing grievances.
He further urged all members of ANIAS to continue to uphold the laws of the state, respect government policies, and contribute positively to the peace, stability, and development of Anambra State.
