Akwa Ibom Community Erupts in Celebration as Prof. Ini Idungima Uko Emerges UNIUYO DVC

The leadership and people of Abat Town in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have expressed profound joy over the emergence of their daughter, Professor Ini Idungima Uko, as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO).
The announcement of her appointment sparked widespread celebration across the community, with women, youths, elders, and other residents joining in the festivities.
The atmosphere in the otherwise quiet community was one of excitement and pride as the people celebrated the elevation of one of their most accomplished daughters to one of the highest academic leadership positions in the university.
Prof. Uko was nominated and recommended to the University’s Governing Council for ratification by the Committee of Professors during the institution’s 140th Senate Meeting held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
The historic appointment has been described by the community as a well-deserved reward for her decades of academic excellence, dedicated service, exceptional scholarship, and exemplary leadership within Nigeria’s university system.
In a goodwill message signed by the Village Head of Abat Town, Chief Ikwaibom Etetor, the community stated that the appointment represents not only a personal achievement for Prof. Uko but also a moment of immense pride for Abat Town, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, and Akwa Ibom State as a whole.

Prof. Uko, a distinguished Professor of English and widow of the late Dr. Idungima Robinson Uko, has built an outstanding academic career spanning several decades.
Prior to her latest appointment, she served meritoriously as Dean of Student Affairs and Head of the School of Basic Studies at the University’s Ime Umanah Campus, where she earned widespread respect for her commitment to academic discipline, quality education, student development, institutional growth, and administrative excellence.
The community described her emergence as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) as a historic achievement, noting that she is the first professor from Abat Town and one of the most accomplished female academics to emerge from Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.
