Quantus Foundation Boosts ABSUTH with Rehabilitated Facilities, Staff, Medical Equipment

The Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba, has recorded another milestone with the formal handover of rehabilitated facilities, newly employed support staff, and medical equipment to the hospital management.

The intervention, powered by the U.S.-based, Nigeria-focused healthcare organisation, Quantus Medical Foundation, in collaboration with the Abia State Ministry of Health.
This was presented on Friday through its WeCare Nigeria and Abia Healthcare Rebirth Initiative (AHCRI).
The initiative aims to strengthen compassionate, accountable, respectful, and excellent healthcare delivery in public hospitals across Abia State.
Speaking during the handover, the foundation’s Patient Liaison Officer (PLO) Manager, Mr Uzoma Onyeka, said the organisation handed over newly rehabilitated patient toilets, 10 newly employed uniformed porters, and 10 uniformed cleaners to the management of ABSUTH.
“This will help restore patient dignity and improve patient satisfaction. That is what we did today,” he said.
Onyeka said the foundation also donated essential medical equipment, including blood pressure monitors, glucometers, and pulse oximeters, to the Accident and Emergency and Casualty units to enhance patient care and improve the overall patient experience.
“Our watchword is that no emergency patient should be turned away.
“The foundation is doing everything within its power to ensure that every patient who comes to ABSUTH leaves with a positive experience,” Onyeka added.
He explained that Quantus Medical Foundation operates with a “CARE” matrix—Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence—which is already driving a culture change at ABSUTH and other healthcare facilities under the AHCRI.
According to him, the initiative is also being implemented at Abia Specialist Hospital, Umuahia; Aba General Hospital; and the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu.
Also speaking, the PLO Team Lead at ABSUTH, Mr Bernard Egbe, said the Patient Liaison Officers employed and trained by the foundation serve as a bridge between patients and healthcare providers.
“The PLOs help patients navigate the hospital, guide them through procedures, resolve minor issues, identify bottlenecks, and escalate more complex matters when necessary.
“Since the PLOs came on board, there have been testimonies of issues being resolved more easily and amicably. The staff are also adapting, and we have noticed a significant cultural shift,” he said.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of ABSUTH, Prof. Nneka Okoronkwo, commended Governor Alex Otti for revitalising the hospital.
She said the hospital “was in a coma” before Otti’s administration due to prolonged salary arrears and dilapidated infrastructure and equipment.
“Immediately God sent His Excellency to us, he did not leave the health sector behind. He decided to start rebuilding from the rubble,” she said.
Okoronkwo noted that, with the governor’s intervention, ABSUTH had regained accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
She described Quantus Medical Foundation’s intervention as “a big blessing” to the hospital.
“They are not just telling us what we need to do concerning patient care; they are also lending a helping hand.
“They gave us a laptop for medical records, helped renovate our toilets, and today they donated equipment for monitoring blood sugar and oxygen saturation,” she said.
The CMD added that, with the government’s continued investment, ABSUTH is being positioned as a centre for specialised healthcare services, with plans to commence kidney transplant services, expand dialysis services, and fully implement electronic medical records.
Stakeholders at the event expressed appreciation to Governor Otti, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, and the founder of Quantus Medical Foundation, Dr Nnenna Ihekoromadu, for the partnership.
They said the initiative is helping to deliver compassionate, accountable, respectful, and excellent healthcare services across public hospitals in Abia State.
