450 Buildings Face Flood Threat as Adabebe Community Appeals to Soludo to Complete 7km Road Project

No fewer than 450 buildings are under threat from severe flooding in Anambra State community as the rainy season intensifies.

The affected buildings are located along Onukwube Road in Adabebe Village, Amawbia, in Awka South Local Government Area of the state.
Residents said the area is repeatedly submerged whenever it rains, with the floodwaters carving deep gullies that stretch from Union Secondary School and Kabe Schools to the boundary between Amawbia and Nise Community.
Initial efforts to mitigate the flooding were undertaken by the Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Nze Pius Okoye, who facilitated the construction of drainage channels and the asphalting of a section of the road from Kabe Junction, Amawbia, covering about 1.2 kilometres.
However, following the recent cabinet reshuffle, which saw the appointment of a new Commissioner for Works, work on the project has reportedly stalled, leaving residents increasingly worried about the worsening erosion and flood menace.
During the Saturday environmental sanitation exercise, residents embarked on the construction of drainage channels and the clearing of bushes through community self-help efforts as a temporary measure to reduce the impact of the flooding.
In a resolution jointly signed by the Chairman of the Adabebe Neighborhood Association (ANA), Mr. Collins Obidi, and the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Okey Maduforo, the association expressed appreciation to Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo for his extensive road construction projects across Anambra State and his efforts toward improving security of lives and property.
The association, however, lamented the recurring flood disaster affecting the community during every rainy season.
According to the resolution, more than 450 buildings are currently at the mercy of flood erosion, while public infrastructure and critical institutions are also under serious threat.
The statement read:
“We have commenced the construction of concrete drainage channels to direct and control the flow of floodwaters in compliance with the Anambra State Government’s efforts to combat environmental degradation. However, we cannot address this challenge alone. We therefore appeal to Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo to urgently intervene by completing the road project and extending the drainage system to safeguard lives and property.”
The association noted that Adabebe Village is home to important public institutions, including Union Secondary School, Kabe Primary School, Kabe Secondary School, and a private hospital, all of which are increasingly vulnerable to flooding and erosion.
It further stated that completing the proposed 7-kilometre road linking Amawbia to Nise Community would significantly reduce the flood risk, improve access to the area, and avert the looming environmental disaster.
According to the association, a bridge linking the community to Nise has already been completed, making the completion of the remaining road section both necessary and timely.
