Gov.Otti Orders Immediate Rehabilitation of Late Gen. Aguiyi-Ironsi’s Home, Access Road

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has directed the immediate rehabilitation of the country home of Nigeria’s former Head of State, the late General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, as well as Ibeama Primary School, Ndume Otuka, where the late military leader received his early education.
The Governor also instructed the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, to assess the condition of the access road leading to the late General’s residence and submit a report with a view to its immediate rehabilitation.
The directives were contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, following Governor Otti’s address on Saturday during a civic reception held at Ibeama Primary School, Ndume, Umuahia North Local Government Area, in honour of the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Nmeregini.
Responding to requests presented by community leaders from Ndume Otuka, the hometown of the late General Aguiyi-Ironsi, Governor Otti said his administration had taken note of the community’s appeals and would act on them promptly.
According to the Governor, the first request concerned the road leading to the late General’s residence.
“The first one is the road that leads to General Ironsi’s house. I will direct the Commissioner for Works to inspect the road and report back to me so that appropriate action can be taken,” he said.
On the request for the rehabilitation of Ibeama Primary School, Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s commitment to revitalising public schools across the state.
“The second request is about the school. We are undertaking a comprehensive rehabilitation of schools across Abia State, and I believe this school will not be left out. The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board is here and has been directed to return here on Monday to begin the process of fast-tracking the rehabilitation of the school,” the Governor stated.
Governor Otti noted that his administration is implementing a comprehensive programme for the rehabilitation of public schools across the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State as part of its commitment to improving educational infrastructure.
The Governor expressed appreciation to the people for acknowledging the achievements of his administration and for their continued support.
“I would like to thank you for your support and encouragement. Our promise is that we will remain focused and committed to serving the people. Nothing will stop us from delivering on our mandate. We appreciate your confidence in our administration and your continued support,” Governor Otti said.
The Governor also commended the people of Umuahia East State Constituency for organising a thanksgiving service in honour of their son, the Deputy Speaker, noting that gratitude to God remains a virtue encouraged by the Scriptures.
In their goodwill messages, the President-General of the Ndume Otuka Development Union, Deacon Okezie Onyemauwa, and community leader, Elder Chimezie Ndukwe, expressed appreciation for what they described as the remarkable transformation taking place in Abia State under Governor Otti’s administration.
They praised the Governor’s people-centred policies and developmental initiatives, saying his administration had restored hope and renewed public confidence through the execution of impactful projects and the promotion of good governance.
The community leaders reaffirmed their support for Governor Otti and appealed for the rehabilitation of the road leading to the late General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s residence, as well as the renovation of Ibeama Primary School.
Earlier, the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Nmeregini, thanked God for making the occasion possible and expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for attending the event despite his busy schedule.
He described the Governor’s presence as a demonstration of his affection for the people and noted that many of those who organised the event had belonged to opposition parties before the 2023 general election.
According to him, their decision to support Governor Otti was informed by what they described as the transformational leadership and development being witnessed across Abia State.
He also welcomed new members into the Labour Party and expressed confidence that they would continue to support the Governor’s administration.
In his vote of thanks, the Chairman of Kingsuo Global Maritime Limited and Chief Host of the reception, Chief Kingsley Amaechi Offor, commended Governor Otti for what he described as his transformational leadership and developmental achievements in the state.
Chief Offor said the reception was organised to celebrate the Deputy Speaker in recognition of his quality representation and assured the Governor of the constituency’s continued support.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the Labour Party’s senatorial candidate for Abia Central in the 2023 general election; the member representing Isiala Ngwa North/Isiala Ngwa South Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Ginger Onwusibe; the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole; members of the State Executive Council; traditional rulers; political stakeholders; and other invited guests.
