FRSC Backs Tinubu’s Clean Mobility Drive, Unveils Safety Framework for EVs, CNG

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has stated that the bold reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the transportation and energy sectors have positioned Nigeria to embrace cleaner, safer and more cost-effective mobility.
According to him, the reforms are accelerating economic growth, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting environmental sustainability.
He stressed that the success of the initiative must be anchored on a robust road safety ecosystem driven by effective regulation, strict technical standards, sustained public education and enhanced emergency preparedness.
The position of the Corps Marshal was contained in a statement issued by the Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps Headquarters, Abuja, Osondu Ohaeri, and made available to journalists.
The Corps Marshal reaffirmed the Corps’ unwavering commitment to the successful implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by providing the safety, regulatory and enforcement framework required for the seamless adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles across Nigeria.
Shehu Mohammed made the commitment on Thursday while delivering the keynote address at the 3rd Nigeria Auto Industry Summit (NAISU), organised by the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) in collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) at the Radisson Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.
The summit, themed “Nigeria’s Clean Mobility Future: The EV and CNG Journey Under the Bola Tinubu Administration,” brought together policymakers, regulators, automobile manufacturers, energy experts and other key industry stakeholders to chart a sustainable path for Nigeria’s transportation future.
Presenting a paper titled “The Safety of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Vehicles on Nigerian Roads,” the Corps Marshal explained that the FRSC has strategically aligned its operations with the Federal Government’s clean energy transportation policy.
He said the Corps has strengthened vehicle inspection protocols for CNG-powered and converted vehicles, enhanced emergency response capabilities, improved crash reporting through the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS), and intensified nationwide public enlightenment campaigns on the safe use of emerging vehicle technologies.
According to him, these measures are aimed at building public confidence while ensuring that Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy does not compromise road safety.
He noted that as the country embraces alternative fuel technologies, the FRSC remains committed to ensuring that safety considerations remain at the forefront of the transition.
The Corps Marshal further disclosed that the FRSC is actively collaborating with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) and other strategic partners to develop a comprehensive framework for the safe deployment of Electric Vehicles and CNG-powered vehicles across the country.
He explained that the collaboration covers the operationalisation of the National Gas Vehicle Management System (NGVMS), the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), coordinated vehicle inspections, emergency response protocols, the introduction of dedicated EV/CNG number plates, structured inter-agency data sharing and sustained nationwide public awareness campaigns.
In addition, the Corps Marshal highlighted the functionalities of the FRSC Mobile Application, describing it as an innovative digital platform designed to assist motorists in adapting to Nigeria’s evolving clean mobility ecosystem by providing access to essential road safety information and related services.
Shehu Mohammed also disclosed that the FRSC is supporting the pilot deployment of Electric Vehicles in Abuja while working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure that all factory-built and converted CNG vehicles comply fully with established safety standards. He maintained that periodic vehicle inspections, certification of conversion centres, specialised training for emergency responders and continuous stakeholder engagement remain critical to achieving a safe, efficient and sustainable clean mobility transition.
While highlighting the environmental, economic and social benefits of Electric Vehicles and CNG-powered vehicles, the Corps Marshal emphasised that innovation must always be matched with responsibility.
He called on vehicle owners, transport operators, conversion centres, automobile manufacturers and other industry players to adhere strictly to approved safety standards, stressing that public safety remains the cornerstone of Nigeria’s clean mobility journey.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his visionary leadership in driving Nigeria’s clean energy transition, describing the administration’s investment in alternative fuel transportation as a transformative policy that will reduce transportation costs, strengthen national energy security, create employment opportunities, stimulate local automotive manufacturing and technological innovation, attract investment and position Nigeria among the leading nations embracing sustainable mobility.
The Corps Marshal assured Nigerians that the Federal Road Safety Corps would continue to provide the technical leadership, regulatory oversight and operational support required to ensure that the Renewed Hope Agenda on clean transportation delivers its intended economic, environmental and road safety benefits for both present and future generations.
He reiterated that the Corps remains committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to build a transportation system that is safe, resilient, environmentally friendly and globally competitive.
