CP Nnanna Oji Ama Assumes Office as 36th Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Pledges Stronger Community Policing

The 36th Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has officially assumed duty as the new Commissioner of Police in the state, pledging to reinforce community policing initiatives, strengthen collaboration with sister security agencies, organised vigilante groups and other critical stakeholders, and build greater public confidence through effective partnership and sustained engagement.
Speaking shortly after assuming office, CP Oji Ama issued a stern warning to officers and men of the Command against engaging in practices capable of tarnishing the image of the Nigeria Police Force or undermining public trust.
He also assured members of the media of his readiness to partner with them to promote effective policing and enhance public safety in the state.
The Commissioner declared that his administration would adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards intimidation, extortion and other forms of misconduct by police personnel.
“No intimidation, no extortion. We will ensure that law-abiding citizens are able to conduct their legitimate businesses without fear of intimidation,” he said.
According to him, the Command would operate a strict zero-extortion policy, stressing that any form of extortion, if previously existing, would not be tolerated under his leadership.
“Our operations will be just. We need the trust of the public. I have warned all formations and divisions on the need to be professional and ethical in the process of conducting their duties,” he said.
CP Oji Ama disclosed that, upon assumption of office, he received comprehensive briefings on the security situation across Anambra State, adding that his administration would build on existing security efforts while identifying areas requiring renewed attention.
He commended and acknowledged the dedication, professionalism and sacrifices of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, other security agencies and, most importantly, the people of Anambra State for their continued cooperation, support and partnership in the collective effort to maintain peace, security and public safety.
The Commissioner assured Ndi Anambra that the Command would discharge its constitutional responsibilities with integrity, fairness, professionalism and respect for the rule of law.
“We shall remain resolute in protecting lives and property, preventing crime and maintaining public order throughout the State,” he said.
He urged residents of Anambra State to remain law-abiding, vigilant and security-conscious, while encouraging them to continue supporting the Police and other security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing and combating crime.
“I also appeal to members of the public not to hesitate to report suspicious persons, activities or incidents to the nearest Police Station or through our designated emergency channels,” he said.

CP Oji Ama assured Ndi Anambra that the Anambra State Police Command, under his leadership, would remain steadfast in protecting lives and property, upholding the rule of law, strengthening strategic partnerships and ensuring that every law-abiding citizen could live and conduct legitimate business in an atmosphere of peace and security.
“Together, through unity of purpose, mutual trust and collective responsibility, we shall build a safer, more secure and more prosperous Anambra State,” he said.

The new Commissioner also pledged to work closely with the media to enhance effective policing in the state, urging journalists to remain factual, balanced and objective in their reportage.
Addressing journalists, he described the media as an indispensable component of the state’s security architecture and called for responsible reporting, particularly during periods of heightened security concerns.
“Gentlemen of the Press, as members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, you remain indispensable partners in the security architecture of our State. Your responsibility in informing the public, especially during periods of heightened security concern, cannot be overemphasised.

Background and Career Profile
CP Nnanna Oji Ama takes over the leadership of the Anambra State Police Command following the retirement of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, who was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
The new Commissioner of Police is a highly experienced and accomplished senior police officer with more than three decades of distinguished service in the Nigeria Police Force.
Prior to his deployment to Anambra State, CP Oji Ama served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He had previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.
A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Jos.
He commenced his policing career as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and received training at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State. His career has since spanned several critical areas of policing, including intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.
His previous appointments include Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja; Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; Zonal Criminal Investigation Department, Zone 9, Umuahia; Commanding Officer, No. 11 Police Mobile Force, Calabar; Divisional Police Officer, Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji in the Federal Capital Territory; Coordinator of Courses, Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer, No. 26 Police Mobile Force, Uyo; Divisional Crime Officer, Sango-Ota, Ogun State; and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, among other strategic appointments.
The new Commissioner has also undergone several professional and strategic training programmes within and outside Nigeria. These include the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru; the Joint Operational Planning Course conducted in conjunction with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; the Incident Site Commander’s Course organised by the British High Commission College of Policing; the Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management Course; the Advanced Detective Course; and various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.
CP Nnanna Oji Ama has also been recognised for his professional courage and operational effectiveness.
His recognitions include a Commendation Award for uncommon bravery, courage and gallantry following the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during a shootout with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, in 2007.
The new Commissioner of Police is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Nigerian Psychological Association and the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
Upon assuming office, CP Nnanna Oji Ama reiterated his commitment to consolidating existing security gains in Anambra State while strengthening collaboration among the Police, other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders.
