Hon. Lucky Johnson Celebrates New Yam Festivals with Eluama, Amunne Ovim Communities

The member representing Isuikwuato Local Government Area in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Lucky Johnson, has joined the good people of Eluama and Amunne Ovim communities in celebrating their respective New Yam Festivals.

The House member attended the traditional festivals at their separate locations as part of his efforts to strengthen his connection with the grassroots and identify more closely with the people he represents.

Speaking at the Iri Ji Ọhụrụ (New Yam Festival) in Eluama, Hon. Lucky Johnson said that, in Igbo culture, the New Yam Festival is not simply about eating the first harvest of the season, but also serves as a powerful reminder of where the people came from and who they are.

He urged the people to continue to preserve the festival and pass its traditions, values, and cultural significance on to generations yet unborn.

According to him, the new yam festival represents the reward for hard work, the blessings of the land, the strength and resilience of the farmer, and the abundance of the community.

“In the company of my leaders, we had the honour of joining the Eluama community in celebrating their Iri Ji Ọhụrụ (New Yam Festival),” he said.

Hon. Johnson noted that despite the heavy rainfall, which attempted to disrupt the celebration, the people turned out in large numbers to participate in the event.

He said that although the drums of this year’s New Yam Festival may have gone quiet, the significance and message of Iri Ji Ọhụrụ remain alive in the hearts of the people.

“When we gather to celebrate, we are not merely celebrating yam; we are celebrating life, family, unity, gratitude, and heritage.

“We will not allow the stories, language, customs, and values of our ancestors to disappear.
“Iri Ji Ọhụrụ is our identity.
“Congratulations to Ndi Eluama, at home and abroad, on the successful celebration of your Iri Ji Ọhụrụ ceremony.
“Ndewo, Ndi Isuikwuato m,” he said.

Speaking at the Amunne Ovim Community, Hon. Lucky Johnson said he was delighted to join the good people of Amunne Ovim, Isuikwuato, in celebrating the Iri Ji Ndi Amunne Ovim (New Yam Festival).

According to him, the celebration was a beautiful occasion that reflected the rich culture, traditions, and heritage of the community.
