No Peace, No Development: Soludo Charges Traditional Rulers to Secure Anambra Communities

The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, has stated that permanent peace in the state is a non-negotiable prerequisite for grassroots development.

He made the statement while presenting certificates of recognition to the Traditional Rulers of Nsugbe and Adazi-Nnukwu, Igwe John Nzekwesili Nweke and Igwe Aethelbirth Muoka, respectively, at the Light House, Awka, the state capital.

The Governor charged the newly recognised traditional rulers to act as impartial fathers to all members of their respective domains.

During the presentation of the certificates of recognition, the Governor offered both congratulations and commiserations to the traditional rulers, while acknowledging the challenges that come with leadership.

He said opposition to authority is a long-standing reality anywhere in the world.

Prof. Soludo challenged the monarchs to make every necessary effort to ensure peace in their respective communities.

Emphasising that the monarchs are now fathers to all, he urged them to embrace both their supporters and critics alike.

Highlighting systemic issues in grassroots administration, Governor Soludo revealed that the state is working on a new Community Administration Law designed to establish structured community governance.

He added that communities are currently governed by voluntary town unions registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, a system he said has led to multiple rival factions and endless court cases over leadership and traditional rulership.

According to the Governor factions exist in communities largely because they are governed by voluntary associations.

Governor Soludo enjoined veteran traditional rulers to guide the new entrants as the state works to evolve a new society through a bottom-up approach that will put Anambra communities on the global map.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Barr. Ifeanyi Ezeaka, stated that both traditional rulers went through due process of law at the selection level.

“These new leaders are the first to be presented during Mr. Governor’s second tenure, following the recognition of twelve traditional rulers during his first term. The process involved the communities passing through the local government authorities before receiving final approval from the state.”he said.

Speaking to the media, the two traditional rulers assured the public of their commitment to harmonising their people and enthroning peace in their respective communities.

The event was also witnessed by the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, alongside the Presidents-General of both communities.
