Child S@xual Abuse: CPN Calls for Increased Vigilance Among School Children

Students in Anambra state to teacher on s@xual abuse

The Child Protection Network (CPN) has raised concern over the rising cases of child s@xual abuse in Anambra State, urging heightened vigilance among school children and their teachers.

Members of the coalition made this appeal during a series of sensitization activities conducted in various schools across the three senatorial districts of the state. These activities were organized in response to the alarming increase in cases of s@xual abuse involving children.

The campaign, titled “Awareness Creation on S@xual Abuse: Case Reporting and Handling,” is powered by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC 2) programme, implemented by International IDEA and funded by the European Union.

During a sensitization session at Community Secondary School, Umuokpu-Awka, CPN member Ugochi Freeman stated that s@xual activity is meant for consenting married adults and warned students against engaging in it. “S@x is meant to be enjoyed by a husband and wife. Stop stealing what does not belong to you,” she said.

Freeman advised the students to recognize and maintain appropriate boundaries, especially when confronted with suspicious or inappropriate behavior. “You must know the red flags—those signs that indicate something is wrong. I strongly advise you not to cross your boundaries,” she stated.

She further explained, “According to the Child Rights Law and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, anyone who engages in a s@xual relationship with a child under the age of 18 is committing a crime. This is classified as s@xual abuse.”

“Some children are being defiled by their parents, uncles, relatives, neighbors, or even fellow children. When you observe certain advances, that’s a red flag—something is wrong,”

“Nobody has the right to touch your sensitive parts. If someone is asking for something you cannot or should not give, be cautious.” She said.

Freeman encouraged students to report such behavior: “If you’re in school, talk to your teacher or principal. If you’re at home, speak to your parents or another trusted adult. Evil thrives in secrecy. You can also report to CPN, and we will respond promptly. Action will be taken in your best interest. CPN is committed to ensuring that perpetrators face justice.”

Another CPN member, Yohana Rachel, urged students to prioritize their education and avoid any form of illicit s@xual activity.

“Early s@xual activity will derail your goals,” “She already told you about the red flags—don’t ignore them.”

“CPN is determined to ensure that child s@xual abusers are brought to justice. But you must speak up and report incidents so we can take the necessary action. We provide victims with immediate access to healthcare, counseling, and legal support,”

“Protect yourself and those around you. Do not remain silent. Call and report. Don’t be afraid.”Yohana added.

The school principal, Gloria Aratoke, represented by the school’s guidance counselor, Chidinma Onuorah, expressed appreciation to CPN for the enlightening session.

“We are truly grateful for this eye-opening experience. We assure you that we will implement what we have learned.”she stated.

A JSS 3 student, Bright Onuorah, also expressed gratitude on behalf of the students.

“We will abstain from s@x as you have advised. We will prioritize our education above all else,” he said.

The CPN team was led by its Coordinator, Eucharia Anekwe, who pledged continued efforts to combat child s@xual abuse.

“Child s@xual abuse is a menace that can destroy our children’s academic aspirations. That’s why this campaign is so important—to educate children and equip them to prevent abuse.”

“CPN is committed to spreading this message far and wide because with education and awareness comes the power to prevent abuse,” Anekwe affirmed.

Similar campaigns were also held at Community Secondary School Oko, Girls’ High School Nnewi, Ado Girls’ Secondary School Onitsha, City Comprehensive College Ogidi, and Community Secondary School Umuoba-Anam.
