WAEC Denies Cancellation of May–June Examinations, Describes Author as False Peddler
Students sitting for West African Senior School Certificate Examination
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied the trending false report claiming that, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, it has cancelled the recently concluded West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2025.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, Moyosola Adesina, the Council firmly stated that the examination has not been cancelled.
According to the statement, the Council believes the false claim is being spread by mischief-makers with the intent to discredit WAEC, cause confusion, and incite panic among candidates who sat for the examination.
WAEC urged all stakeholders and members of the public to disregard the publication, describing it as completely false and malicious, with the sole aim of misleading the public and tarnishing the Council’s reputation.
The full statement reads:”The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all the papers written during the just-concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025. According to the press release dated Saturday, July 19, 2025, and currently circulating on various social media platforms, it was claimed that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had cancelled the entire examination due to widespread examination malpractice, coordinated leakage of question papers, and unauthorized digital dissemination of examination materials.
The WAEC Management wishes to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement did not originate from the Council. The said examination has not been cancelled. Although the source of the misinformation is yet to be identified, the Council is confident that the falsehood is being spread by malicious actors intent on undermining our credibility and causing unnecessary alarm among candidates and the general public. In fact, marking of the scripts for the 2025 examination has just been concluded, and results will be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.
The Council wishes to remind the general public and all stakeholders that all official information from WAEC is disseminated through our verified social media handles and accredited media platforms across the country. Likewise, all press statements are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council, on behalf of the Head of National Office.
We therefore urge our stakeholders and the general public to disregard the false publication in circulation.”
