Ocha Brigade Enforces Clean up at Main Market Onitsha Amid Resistance
By Karen James
The Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ocha Brigade) on Tuesday intensified its environmental enforcement campaign at the Main Market, Onitsha covering Ajasa, Sokoto Road, Ose, and adjoining areas where officers removed illegal street traders and cleared obstructions responsible for persistent gridlock in the commercial centre.
Over time, many traders had converted access roads and drainage channels into trading points, preventing motorists and visitors from entering the market to conduct business.
According to the Brigade, uncontrolled street trading in these sections of the market has severely disrupted traffic flow, blocked emergency access routes, and undermined sanitation standards. During the operation, officers dismantled makeshift stalls, cleared goods displayed on walkways, and removed unauthorized structures placed on drainage lines—activities that have long contributed to flooding, pollution, and other environmental hazards.
The enforcement team, however, encountered serious resistance at the Bright Street axis, where traders reportedly threatened to attack Ocha Brigade personnel should they return to enforce sanitation rules.
A similar confrontation erupted around the White House section of the market, where some individuals attacked Ocha Brigade vehicles and warned operatives against future entry or passage through the area.
Speaking after the operation, the Managing Director of Ocha Brigade, Comrade Celestine Anere, commended his officers for their courage and resilience despite the hostility.
He reaffirmed that the exercise is continuous and forms part of a broader statewide initiative to restore order, maintain cleanliness, and ensure the free movement of people and goods across Anambra State.
He also reiterated that traders and residents who fail to desilt their drainages or provide proper catchment pits will face legal sanctions.
Comrade Anere appealed to Ndi Anambra for cooperation, urging the public to support the agency by reporting blocked drainages, properties discharging waste improperly, and any other environmental violations.
He emphasized that the Ocha Brigade hotlines remain active and responsive, assuring residents that “one call and the issue will be resolved.”
