Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, in Oyi Local Government Area, have arrested a suspected member of a criminal gang, Kalu Okafor (male), aged 43, at Okpoko in Ogbaru LGA.

The suspect was apprehended in the early hours of 3 December 2025.

The arrest is part of the ongoing investigation into a syndicate involved in conspiracy, kidnapping, armed robbery, and car-snatching, all reportedly linked to the activities of a proscribed secessionist group.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the operation led to the recovery of significant arms and security-sensitive items. These include:One (1) AK-47 rifle,One (1) pump-action gun,Two (2) AK-47 magazines,Eighty-eight (88) rounds of ammunition,Two (2) face masks and Two (2) hand gloves

SP Ikenga stated that the latest breakthrough followed the confession of a previously arrested gang member, Chukwudi Nwakpa, who remains in custody.

Nwakpa revealed that after each kidnapping operation, the gang routinely handed over their firearms to Kalu Okafor for concealment to evade law-enforcement detection.

Kalu reportedly admitted not only to safeguarding the gang’s weapons but also to receiving financial returns from ransom proceeds collected from kidnapped victims.

The Police Command confirmed that the suspect is currently cooperating with investigators and providing actionable intelligence aimed at tracking down other fleeing members of the gang, as well as recovering additional weapons and operational assets.
